I received the following from an email discussion group...thought it might stir some thoughts/comments?

In a message recorded in 1979 Hal Lindsey made the following predictions …

*Lindsey predicts a limited nuclear war before 1984 and an all out world war before 1989

*Lindsey predicts that the world will run out of all raw materials before 1986

*Lindsey predicts that the “Jupiter Effect” will occur in 1982 and at that time dams will burst and nuclear power plants will have major melt downs

*Lindsey predicts that the European Union will be the most powerful entity in the world by the mid 1980’s

*Lindsey announces that the Antichrist is alive and well in Europe as he is making this speech and will soon make his appearance

*Lindsey predicts the murder of all Mormons

*Lindsey says that by the end of the 1980’s the Arab nations will have a complete strangle hold on America and dominate the wealth of the U.S.

*Lindsey predicts that Russia will invade Jerusalem in the 1980’s and that the U.S. will be powerless to do anything about it.

*Lindsey announces to the people of his audience that the rapture will occur in their lifetime.

According to Hal Lindsey all of these predictions are based on “Clear Bible prophecies”.

    You be the judge.

Many years ago Lindsey predicted a number of things. At that time I could not believe how many were reading his book. At the time I told people it was a waste and they did not like it very well when when I told them that. Not much has changed today. They are now on TV being supported by the ignorant in churches.

I do know one thing for sure: Jesus will come between 3:00 AM and 4:00 AM somewhere on this earth.

Hal was wrong in many of his "predictions", but I think his book, (Late Great Planet Earth) had a purpose beyond the "predictions".

His book woke many people to the fact that we are living at the "end of time" and sparked research into the scriptures that normally wouldn't have occurred, without his book, even if it was to prove/disprove his predictions.

It's due to the "Debate" about his book, that the world/Christians have become aware of the many "predictions" about the end times.

In that "respect", I think both him and his book accomplished "their purpose", that is making people aware of "Scripture".

God does work in "mysterious ways".

He certainly has had a lot of praise for the Pope on his program in times past. That would make him a false prophet in my book. His dipensationalism just makes him a run of the mill heretic. :<)lol.

I really hope this was said in jest. Putting "lol" on the end doesnt quite hide the slander toward other brothers in Christ. There are many on this board who love the Lord and the Word who are dispenstionalists, we are hardly heretics.

As I recall, twenty years ago there were quite a few people predicting that the rapture would happen in the late 1980s. One radio host even set a specific week in September 1987 (thereby getting around the "no man knows the day or the hour"). They were all wrong, and not many are setting dates today.

I don't think anyone has all the correct answers, but possession of even the wrong answers, shows we are studying, attempting to learn.

I don't "totally" discount another's belief until I have "conclusive proof" from Scripture/Spirit it's wrong, Man's praises of man doesn't influence me, one way or the other.

It's been years since I read his books, but if I remember correctly, he wasn't "predicting" so much as "speculating", based on information at hand.

It is my understanding that these did not come from his actual books, but from a message he presented in 1979 and that they were phrased in the fashion of "predictions".

Unless he was claiming direct personal revelation from God, I don't think these predictions could count as prophecy. I'm predicting light rain tomorrow, but I'm not prophesying it!

I don't think he's a false prophet, or in any way unsaved. Just in error. Or should I say, based on his past results, numerous errors.

    What about this part:

Although he is not claiming a direct revelation from God, he is claiming these predictions come from clear Bible prophecies?

It is very clear that Lindsey is a false prophet. This is clearly and easily demonstrated by his failed predictions.

The prophecies iin scripture are clear. The interpretations thereof are open to wide and diverse speculation. Lindsey hasn't learned the difference between prophecy and interpretation.

I am not going to say he is unsaved. But I do think he is walking dangerously close to being a false prophet. But he did do a good job of selling books. Baptists for years have swallowed up his stuff hook, line and sinker.

It is very good to hear that everyone is not making a judgement about Hal Lindsey's salvation, since the only two that know that are Hal Lindsey and God.

It was The Late Great Planet Earth that led me on the road to salvation.
I had an innate trust in the Bible, having been forced to attend S.School as a child, but no understanding of it.
Lindsay's book scared me into seeking the the truth. I found it, believed and was saved.
I now know that Lindsay was not a very accurate predicter of the future.

I don't believe he himself would claim to be a prophet unless you spell it "profit."

He has made a fortune writing more and more books to correct his bad guesses.

Even if bad theology leads people to the Lord, it has accomplished a good thing, much like the horridly bad theology in the Left Behind fiction.

It would be much better to do it with sound doctrine, though.

False prophet? No, just a poor judge of the times.

I remember that. I was in the Philippines then, and I heard of one whole Korean congregation in Korea who sold everything they had and brought it to the feet of their pastor, who promptly disappeared before the 'appointed' time.
And then there were a number of Filipino Baptist churches who gathered in their churches at the appointed date. I think it was September 21, which incidentally was the date when the dictator of the Philippines declared Martial Law. (But he had nothing to do with the 'rapture' rumor, though.)

Harold Camping is still giving dates. Last I heard he even gave the date when Jesus started his public ministry. The guy is gone bonkers !
