Did you see that GrifDog from the BB actually got 2 minutes of the new Episode 2 filming? He got the whole script of Episode 1 and became the #1 fan site for Star Wars as he leaked out info a year in advance.

I have seen all the movies and found they were lots of fun. In fact, when they originally came out, I was in my early teens our family did not go to movies. I first saw them at a showing in the Public Library one summer during college, about 7-8 years after their original release. I remember the librarian who hosted the showing saying “Now I cannot imagine that I will get an affirmative response to this question, but is there anyone here who has never seen this movie before?” My college buddy and I put up our hands as the audience gasped!” Having not seen that movie, we were more strange to the audience than any creature in the movie!

But shouldn’t our enthusiasm for these movies be tempered by their message. The latest one was full of images and ideas that should disturb Christians. For instance, there was a fight scene between one of the Jedi (the characters name escapes me) and Darth Maul. The Jedi was in a white robe with a beard and shoulder length hair. He bore a remarkable resemblance to the popular conception of Jesus. And Darth Maul has an amazing resemblance to the popular conception of the devil. Yet who wins their fight? The devil kills Jesus. What an image. And Anakin Skywalker, who grows up to be the evil Darth Vader, is said in the movie by his mother to be virgin born! I didn’t catch that til I saw the movie the second time, but there it was.

The sad thing about the message of the movie is that it teaches that there is an eternal struggle in the universe between good and evil that is never to be resolved. We can only hope to struggle and balance the evil with good. How hopeless! And this false message is communicated innocently and subtly with images that remind the audience of Christian characters so that people see no difference in what is communicated here and the message of the gospel. And this false theology is becoming the theology of the average American. I think this type of deception is perhaps a prototype of the kind of deception that Anti-Christ will use. “Strong delusion so that men believe a lie”, and delusion that “if it were possible, would deceive the very elect”.

We should heed Francis Scheaffer’s advice to critique our culture and be careful what we endorse.

Fantasy must be judged as anything else: with Scripture! (Sola Scriptura!!) As my old sem prof said, A true test of modern movies is "Does it stand up to the test of God's Word?" It doesn't mean you cannot view it (altho' I've regretted seeing many movies because of their worldly content); it does mean you have to see it through God's point of view. If the content of the movie promotes Eastern mystical philosophy, then shine the light of the Truth on it; and proclaim the movie for what it is. Don't defend it, or you'll find yourself in violation of Scriptural principle (in other words, you'll be sinning!).
Philippians 4 is a good rule of thumb for all our viewing/listening/reading/discussing:
The TRUE, the NOBLE, the JUST, the PURE, the LOVELY, of GOOD REPORT, the VIRTUOUS, the PRAISEWORTHY--Meditate on THESE THINGS!!
Not hard for definition--but oh so hard on the flesh! ;)
