First they put in a massive jungle gym swing and slide apparatus for the girls, and on Jay Leno, Obama says his wife has planted a garden behind the WH. And she has asked a public school first grade class to watch over the garden.

What will the White House look like when Obama loses the 2012 re-election?

Actually, it's kind of down home and folksy looking around there. And the Obama lovers that I know, think it's so "sweet" that the Obama's' are making the White House look lived in....give me a break!

I know they need to make it their home, but, are they "trashing" the White House with these "sweet little family projects?"

Let's hear what the Forum has to say about this.......

    Shalom,

    Pastor Paul :type:

Those are some of the best things that Obama has done since being in the WH. I have no problem with him doing that. I think it is good. The WH will recover very quickly whenever he leaves.

Not if only he would stay out of the budget and out of foreign policy, there might be a country left in 2012 that is not the laughingstock of the world.

I wonder if they had a garden at their mansion in Chicago or have they just taken up gardening before they sign into law the federal regs to make organic farmers comply to govt pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, etc. I wonder if they'll get a pass. You becha.

    I wonder as well.

On another note is this garden open to the public? And who will be eating the benefits? I see this as a security risk. Or perhaps I've been reading to much English history.

OH for crying out loud. There have been goats on the lawn, kids playing there, etc. etc. throughout history. Posts like the OP make the poster look like a nitpicker looking for any little thing to criticize. Unbelievable!

Being a Cajun that has been "transplanted" into rural Alabama---I have no problem with Mrs. Michelle having a garden----a Pea Patch, Watermelon patch, six or seven rows of sweet corn, tomatoes-----lots and lots of tomatoes:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:----bell pepper, Squash, Okra:thumbs:----I would absolutely love it---and my wife would too

If I were part of Secret Service assigned to Mrs. Michelle---this Cajun "Homebody" would tell her somethin' like

"M'am!!!! You let me finish hoeing out that row and you get on inside there out of this heat!!!!"

It would be interesting to me to know how much of the actual work Michelle Obama does in this garden. Or how long she sticks too it.

I'm wondering if this isn't just for show - more symbolism over substance that has become the signature style of Democrats and liberals.

I am also wondering if in a few months, if the economy is much worse than it is now, the White House will be admonishing the people for not thinking ahead like Michelle did and planted our own gardens so then we not have to be so dependent upon the government. That we need to learn to be more self reliant.

You guys really, really need to find issues to criticize. This is picking at the bones here. Even I could find substantive things to criticize about the Obamas, but this makes you look foolish. "I'm wondering"?. Yep...all in your imagination. Try to stick with reality.

Hasn't the White House had victory gardens in the past?

And haven't there been other children in residence where they changed desks, went sledding down the stairs, etc.? Just because a small child hasn't been there in a while doesn't mean that they're "trashing" the White House. If they were then every one of us who have a garden and swingset have trashed our own homes, right?

Where are a couple of the things that would really be worthwhile, namely a Basketball Court and a great place for Table Tennis? Why should not these sports be covered?? Since Pres. Bush (43) has had softball and T-ball on the W/H lawn and Pres. Kennedy had 'flag-football' games there, definitely why not these, as well?

I mean, for more than 50 years we have had places for both Horseshoes [Pres. Bush (41) and Truman were both very skilled at this.] and a putting green, for pitching, chipping, and putting (Of the last several Presidents through Obama, only Presidents Carter and Truman never needed any "tee-time" at the local links, although aside from Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Ford, and Obama, the 'Handicaps' and scorecards of the rest should likely be forever kept as a 'State secret'. Thankfully, the Secret Service apparently never did allow Pres. Ford to practice his 'Driver', though. That coulda' been somewhat dangerous for unwary passers-by!); a Billiards Room for almost 200 years (Pres. Monroe was literally of championship quality, and could wield a cue-stick as well as Pres. Jackson could wield a cane.); and a Swimming Pool [Pres. John Kennedy was an excellent swimmer, as were also Pres. Bush (41), and Ford, and Pres. Carter and Nixon also were quite familiar with the water.] (Ya' gotta' think about a few of those above, for a minute, maybe!)

A garden for the First Lady? First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt also had her own 'Victory Garden' at the White House, the Clintons grew 'containerized vegetables' on the White House roof, and the 'Rose Garden' has effectively been there for more than a century. Initially, this garden area had its own clotheslines, even. I believe, there have been some other 'Presidential' flower and vegetable gardens, as well, but am not sure of the specifics on this.

A Swing and slide set for the Presidential daughters? Why not? Amy Carter had a tree house. (Did Pres. Carter build this himself, foreshadowing his future work with Habitat for Humanity?)

Stables have been (or were) around the White House for longer than automobiles, and besides dogs and cats, many other animals have been there, including chickens, pigs, sheep (Wilson was, I believe the last Pres. to have sheep), and cattle (Taft was apparently the last Pres. to have a cow, there). President Kennedy had "Macaroni", the pony for John. Jr. and Carolyn at the White House, and Pres. Taylor's favorite horse grazed the W/H lawn, as did the elephants of Pres. Buchanan. (Now those babies would really call for a king-size "Pooper Scooper" I'd say!)

As to 2012, may I remind one that 8 of the 44 Presidents to date died before completing a term in office, and four of the 8 deaths were due to natural causes. In addition, 4 other Presidents who could have run again for another term, but chose not to for their own various reasons (Pres. Washington, Polk, Arthur, and Coolidge), would not have lived to see that term completed. "President of the United States" and "old-age" have not necessarily been synonomous terms by any stretch, even though 4 have reached the age of 90, two more have topped 85, and both Presidents Carter and Bush (41), will hit 85 in only a few months.

In summary, I am no particular fan of many, if not most, of the political ideas and positions advocated by President Obama. I have seen absolutely nothing to improve my own view on this in these two months, thus far. But the implications and insinuations contained in the OP are 'hitting below the belt' IMO. :(

"Virtually the entire Obama family, including the president, will pull weeds, “whether they like it or not,” Mrs. Obama said with a laugh. “Now Grandma, my mom, I don’t know.” Her mother, she said, will probably sit back and say: “Isn’t that lovely. You missed a spot.”"

Agreed. This is one of the silliest and most petty threads to have graced the politics section.

If you have a valid complaint...fine. This isn't in the area code of a valid complaint.

In fact, this kind of whining makes it difficult for substantive reasons to be worried about Obama's presidency to be voiced.

Do you expect any first lady cooks dinner? They have chefs for that.

What next? "Did you hear that one of the kids forgot to flush?"

Sorry, no watermelon, corn, tomatoes, bell pepper, squash, or okra patches at the White House.
Berries, rhubarb, peas, carrots, fennel, onions, and lots and lots of greens are in the plans, however.

While many of the more recent first ladies did not cook very much, if at all (Both Lou Hoover and Eleanor Roosevelt never cooked.), some do and did fairly regularly, including Bess Truman among others.

And Florence Harding was also known to be able to wield a mean carving knife, quite well, thank you.

(Ya' might have to think about that last one for a moment!) ;)
