I have some good friends who live within a half mile of our church but they are members and regularly attend a Baptist church about 15 miles away. They stated they would like to help us in our VBS this coming summer.

Do you think we should allow them to help us, or should only members of our church be permitted to be VBS workers.

Not a pressing issue, but I would like some thoughts on it.

    Thanks,

    Salty

Do you need help with VBS?

Since you know these folks, this is very different than the situation I usually get - which is someone new to the church wants to work before joining (or without ever :tongue3: ).

Having others come in and help and or direct VBS is common practice.

They'd be welcome by the church where I get to serve. Not only do you know them, they want to serve. I'll take someone driving 100 miles with a passion over someone walking 100 that I have to drag kicking and screaming into service. :)

    Isn't that the truth!! :applause:

We have a handful of members from other churches help every year. And subsequently, some of our members help them out in return.

We have outsiders help out with our VBS (relatives from out of state, people from other churches, etc.) and it works out great. They're not department heads or other main staff but they help out directly with the kids. I'd take them in a hearbeat - if you know them well.

When I used to direct VBS (for many many many years), if people wanted to help, I would let them. Now, in positioning, I would place "members" in teaching positions but things like helpers, crafts, recreation, snacks, etc, it was wide open.

Let me get this straight.. Someone volunteered to the pastor their help for VBS and you have to ask should you?

Son, where did you place your brains this morning?

I'm pretty sure their help will be appreciated and accepted without any trouble. Of course I'm just a pastor that has to pull teeth sometimes to get help!!!:thumbsup::godisgood:

They would be welcome at our church. I would not want them to be director and if possible would pair them with members. Around here a lot of the kids and workers cycle through multiple churches during the summer. My kids used to attend multiple weeks of VBS and now they work multiple weeks.

The boy scouts in our troop always ask me if they can get credit for service project hours for being on VBS staff. Our rule has always been they can, as long as its not their own church. Your expected to work for your church, but if you help others then I give them credit for it.

Wouldn't this be a great ministry opportunity for some willing and able couples in your local church?

Take the summer (probably June and July) get in a camper/rv and travel from church to church in needy areas (not the Bible belt) and help out with VBS in anyway you could.

Man that is just a terrific thought! What a blessing that couple(s) could be. Imagine having several retired couples who could do this. A traveling group of willing servants. The Kingdom investment would be HUGE.
