I was quite surprised to see the following short article from the Daily News Record, one of the most conservative newspapers in Virginia.

    From the quote above {And then there's everyone's favorite conservative/libertarian, Rep. Ron Paul. The Los Angeles Times reported that he poured "more earmarks in the pork-laden ... bill than any other Republican." }

CTB, you are wrong on that one, Paul is NOT my favorite conservative. He may be a libertarian, but he is no conservative.

I had a friend a few years ago who won election as a town supervisor (same as a mayor). The first thing he did was to refuse a pay raise!

But overall, I agree with you Pork is Pork is Pork whether the pig is red or blue!

Mcconnell knew Obama lied about not allowing any earmarks and knew democrats would load the bill with pork. He also knew Obama would sign it with no questions asked.

The responsible thing for him to do was to take care of his constituancy.

It would serve no purpose for republicans to take a stand on this particular bill.

Democrats would laugh at their stupidity.

So, the so called "conservatives" shouldn't stand by their principles because the Democrats might laugh at them?! That's absurd! People have laughed at me for believing that Jesus Christ died for me and laughed at me that I believe Jonah was actually in the belly of a whale. Should I stop standing up for those things just because people might laugh at me?

We need people in Congress that are going to stand up for what's right regardless of whether it's popular, everyone else is doing it, or that they might get laughed at. We need leaders with integrity that mean what they say and say what they mean. We need leaders that will simply not take part in these pork laden bills, even if that means that their little part of the world may not benefit from it. We need leaders that actually lead, not ones that follow the herd.

I went to the link you provided to read more..........but found that the total editorial is in your quote.

He wrote an opinion piece and cited names but gave no specifics. By what criteria does he judge 'pork' and what specifically did these people do which was so against their reputation?

But not knowing the author.... its just a stranger's opinion to me.

I'm sort of with MW on this one....

I like Ron Paul, I really do, but I disagree with him on this.

It's like saying that you disagree with robbing a bank, but hey if you happen to be successful in doing it make sure I get my cut.

I also very much disagree with his statement, "I put in all their requests, because I'm their representative."

So, if he were my representative and I said I wanted gold plated toilets in all public buildings, he'd put that in? That's just stupid (my request and his saying he would put it in).

    Thanks Rev

    Ron Paul explains it well:

The budget was going to pass.....eventually cause budgets do get passed ......even if they have to be reworked first.

The money in the budget would be spent by someone, some district, some state, or some institution or agency for which it was designated.

His district had requests for funding and as their representative, he's in Washington to represent the people and their requests or needs from his district..... and has a responsibility to do so........

    However..........

His voice in submitting their request into the bill is not a mark of his personal approval of the spending or the bill.........

In which case he doesn't..... or rather didn't vote for the bill.

But if he hadn't put the money in the bill for the people in his district.... their tax dollars would go to fund 'pork' for other districts and they'd be left without.... becoming the disadvantaged...paying for others' pork or what-have-you with nothing returned to them.

    IOW
Tax dollars out. Others take it and improve their districts. Nothing for his district because no action by their representative to look out for their interests. =no representation.

His character shows in his vote against the finished package.... which is the vehicle transporting the pork.

Another way of looking at it is that the bank is holding the money of many depositers including those of his district.

There's a run on the bank. Those who get in line get some return on their deposit. If you get your depositers in line then they may get their money back..... whether or not its equable is for another to wonder. But if you don't get in line or wait too long then your people loose their deposit when the bank is empty because it went to those who got in line.

No, I don't think he represents EVERY request.... certainly not the absurb ones for gold toilet seats...... but it make be a face cracker during more sober times.:tongue3:

    Uh huh.

    In a perfect world.

Welcome to reality. Politics is not to be confused with Christianity and you'll get no kudos here for acting like a Christian when it's expected of you.

Tooting your own horn doesn't impress anyone here.

What are you even talking about? Can you carry on a conversation without attempting to insult me? I'm not tooting my horn. I'm talking about how we should expect our leaders to have integrity. What do you find so wrong about that?

    Stop whining.

If you feel insulted, it's the result of a guilty conscience.
