CHICAGO — An influential government-appointed medical panel is urging doctors to routinely screen all American teens for depression — a bold step that acknowledges that nearly 2 million teens are affected by this debilitating condition.

Most are undiagnosed and untreated, said the panel, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which sets guidelines for doctors on a host of health issues.

The task force recommendations appear in April's issue of the journal Pediatrics. And they go farther than the American Academy of Pediatrics' own guidance for teen depression screening.

An estimated 6 percent of U.S. teenagers are clinically depressed. Evidence shows that detailed but simple questionnaires can accurately diagnose depression in primary-care settings such as a pediatrician's office.

Would not be any different than a bunch of other medical screens that infants & children routinely are subject to. In fact, I am for routine Gardasil vaccinations for all preteen girls.

Why not? I'm interested in what you see as the downside in screening teenagers for depression?

Because the government has proven it'self over & over again that it is inefficient, and favorable to the drug companies & trial lawyers.

This isn't about the government doing the screening. If that was the case I could understand any and all concerns. This is about your current primary care physician doing the screening. A "government-appointed medical panel" recommends that your current primary provider screen the teenangers.

Again, what's the harm? Your primary doctor should already be on the lookout for issues. This gives him/her one more method of seeing a problem.

Some folks could find a conspiracy in their mother's roast beef. Tin foil hats anyone? Maybe I should start selling them!

That should be up to the parent. Government should stay out of health care. When government, especially the last few administrations, starts "urging" doctors to do things, red flags go up. I don't trust government. They are corrupt, power grabbing miscreants.

And what will the standards be ? What will be done with these "depressed" teens ? Forced medication ? Removal from homes ?

Some people trust the government more than they do their bibles. Not me.

For the government to suggest doctors discuss this screening with parents or guardians is something that I feel would be appropriate. But, for this to be mandatory is something else. What starts out innocently can grow into a problem difficult to deal with.

Want to be protected from cervical cancer? Practice abstinence rather than giving a drug. But, that's always the government's answer. Drug em!!

Are we going to allow our teenagers to have a DSM IV diagnosis (label) at so young a age that may cause problems for them in the future? That's another government answer. Label them!

What is the answer to depression? Is it to drug the teenager up like we do for kids who have discipline problems? Again, drum em!!

I don't trust the government's answer to many of our problems.

Why would we trust a secular humanist philosophy? Psychology is not biblically based, takes no account of soul/spirit, roots itself in evolutionary theory, is atheistic, et.

I would no more subject my children to that than any other ungodly indoctrination.

Aluminum foil hats are much more efficient and are very cost effective.

Also note that one can spray the hat with green pain, loose no efficiency, yet be construed as 'environmental friendly'. Recall that appearing 'environmental friendly' itself eliminates one known source of paranoia.

I'd suggest a Gold looking 'BB' Logo (as in Baptist Board). Gold looks spiffy on some colors of Green.

Doctors do not need to force screenings on children for things based on statistics and government mandates. If I want them screened for depression I will take care of it.

    The list of problems are:

    1. Government appointed panel recommends. I could really stop right there but I won't.

    2. Doctors cannot screen for everything so unless there is a legitimate reason to look for this it is unnecessary.

    3. I do not trust the agenda of government panels.

The government requires you to give your kid certain shots over their lifetime. Let me know when you stop giving those because of distrust of government.

If someone wants to be screened or the parents consent, then fine. But, it should not be the goverment's decision. And, by the way, you can opt out of vaccinations based on religious convictions if you so choose.

But, go ahead matt and bow to Big Brother. Give him you children.

I don't need to let you know anything. And Shots are only required if you go to public schools.
