I am sure this is not the fear you mean, but I will get it out of the way.

Psa 34:11 Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

Psa 34:9 O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for [there is] no want to them that fear him.

Psa 86:11 Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.

Psa 111:10 The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do [his commandments]: his praise endureth for ever.

This probably better apply's to what you are asking.

2Ti 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Hbr 13:6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord [is] my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

I was thinking about HEBREWS 11;7 Bt faith Noah being warned od GOD of things not seen yet; moved with fear, prepared an Ark to the saving of his house: by the which he condemned the the World, and become heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

    Another verse to ponder...

Mathew 10 when Jesus is sending out the 12 disciples-

v28 "And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in hell."

The message is dont fear man, but fear God, but obviously it seems weird for Jesus to tell them to be in a state of fear for their souls..... Were the disciples not yet perfected in love? (1 John 4:17).. This I'm unclear.

For someone who is not of God, they probably would be greatly afraid of their condition which is under the wrath of God. Can this produce faith or is it the beginning of knowledge? (work out their salvation with fear and trembling).. I would say this is when they finally take God seriously and understand reality, but at some point when God heals their souls (John 3:8) it turns into a love/trust/fear relationship; rather than a horror of condemnation they are now thankful under grace. (at which point regeneration takes place I am unclear, but I would guess when things become reality)

I would respond to the OT by saying fear and faith can be, as long as faith is the basis of the relationship in the end. The fear is like a father/son relationship with fear of discipline, love being the center of it on either side.

Hbr 11:7 By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. NKJV

Hbr 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned {by God} about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. NASB

I like the way the NKJV or NASB translates this verse because it takes away the confusion. This was a Godly fear, not a fear of man. Noah was warned by God, the result was a Godly fear.

I looked up the word in strongs. #2125 Eulabeomal; To be caustious, thoughtful, circumspect. To be afraid, to be moved or impressed with a natural or religious fear (Acts 23:10 T.R.; Heb 11:7)

Compared to the words translated as fear in the verses I posted above (2Tim 1:7 and Heb 13:6) and I think it becomes more clear that the writer of Hebrews intended us to understand Noah had a Godly fear, nothing more.

#1167; Deilia; cowardice, timidy, fearfulness(2Tim 1:7) Deriv. from deiliao to shrink for fear

#5399 Phobeo; to cause to run away, terrify, frighten. In the N.T. used in pass. form from phobeomai, to be terrified, afraid.

By the way good thread topic, interesting and thought provoking.
