To all who might be interested:

I have a new volume coming out:

Michael A.G. Haykin (The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary & Fuller Center For Biblical Theology), A. James Fuller, and I have just submitted a volume to Reformation Heritage Books. It is called Soldiers of Christ: The Piety of Basil Manly, Sr. & Basil Manly, Jr. It contains a short biography of each man. It also delves into the papers, sermons, personal letters, songs, songbooks, etc of these two. It is a volume in the Profiles in Reformed Spirituality series of of RHB, Grand Rapids, Mich.

For those who may not know. Basil Manly, Sr. was a prime shaker and mover in starting the Southern Baptist Convention in the 1830s & 1840s. He was also the Chaplain to the Confederacy and offered the prayer when Jefferson Davis was inaugurated. He was also one of the early Presidents of the University of Alabama. He was also one the distinguished pastors of the Charleston (First) Baptist Church.

Manly, Jr. was one of the original four founding members of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

I know it is shameless  and I probably need to apologize. But the volume will be out on or around June 1 if anyone is interested?

    Cheers!

    Congrats Rhet.

Did you happen to work with Jay Collier at RHB? He's a colleague of mine as well as a very nice guy.

    Brandon,

Well here it is!! The ISBN #978-0-9785711-7-7 for Soldiers of Christ.

It is due out, hopefully, before the Southern Baptist Convention meets in late June. And Brandon, FYI, Founders picked it up and not Reformation Heritage.

I hope all of you enjoy this contribution in the realm of Spirituality and the histories of The Southern Baptist Convention and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

It is dedicated to Dr. Al Mohler.

There will not be a big run of copies so you had better "get them while they're hot!"

    (Am I not shameful?!).

    Enjoy! & FYI!

    "That is all!"

That's really great. I will pick up a copy! Will it be listed on Amazon? I recently self-published a small book (www.chrissurber.com/books for free download on the e-Book format) that I wrote primarily for my congregation and for them to give out to friends. It is going well, my congregation which averages about 70+ on Sundays has read / passed on more than a hundred copies and I have also sent a few along to friends from a larger congregation I served as assistant pastor.

This is a small project and I did it almost entirely to have a tool for the church, kind of a "calling card" for the nature of the ministry happening at our little church in this little town, but I have future projects that are partially completed and a few that I want to expand from essays / sermons into more complete thoughts and books. I am just waiting to complete my doctoral studies next spring to have a little more time to devote to them...

I have looked into several publishing options when I am ready to explore something to a broader audience. I'm curious any advice you have about this. You mentioned to me that you would be glad to share it in a post several months ago... After exploring all of the options out there, I think I am at a place where I could really use the good advice of someone who has done it! :type:

    Heroes!

Kudos! I'm glad to see that you have done this. Both Basil, Sr. & Jr. are my heroes! Thank you for your contribution to our understanding of two important figures in our Baptist heritage.

    Manly Volume is Out!

To all who have an ear to hear!

Well here it is! I know it is shameful to promote yourself, but I am going to do it anyway.:tongue3: Below is a link to an announcement about the release of the volume. It tells how to order if you want to get one.

Also, the authors are supposed to be at the Lifeway Bookstore at The Southern Baptist Theological Convention on Wed. June 24 @ 2.30 PM for a book signing.

Congratulations, Dr. Roger D. Duke, on the publication of what is sure to be a good volume on So. Baptist history! (I normally do not mention anyone on the Baptist Board by their personal name, but here I am making a rare exception.) Thanks from one ordinary Baptist to three extraordinary Baptists contributing about two very extraordinary early Southern Baptists.

Dr. Mohler is right, in his introduction, from what I saw, from my very limited perspective.

I certainly agree that the contributions and the real influences of Drs. Basil Manley both Sr. and Jr. are often overlooked among Southern Baptists today, . One could even argue that apart from Dr. Manley, Sr. there would, in fact, not even have been any SBC, at least anything like what we have come to know, today. And the short commendations of such as Drs. Mohler, Dockery, Nettles, Finn, Wills and George are "right on the money" as well.

Perhaps I will even get to meet you at the SBC. We shall see. (I'll be the guy with the beard, who looks like a farmer, wearing the red 'baseball' cap with the MF logo.) ;)

I look forward to the chance to being able to read this volume, regardless.

    Ed
