    1. You believe a citizens money is better spent by the citizen than the government.

    2. You believe in individual responsibility "Republicans would rather teach someone to fish, not give you the fish."

    3. You believe the government should do what its required to do, and no more

    4. Your;re a big believer in individual rights

    5. You favor a free market

Bob Smith, Onondaga county (NY) Republican chairman

The top 5 reasons to be a Democrat:

    1. You believe in competency and straightforward talk with the public

    2. You want us to address th underlying causes of terrorism and th way others view us, not impose our views on others

    3. You care about the environment and understand the need for intelligent energy policy.

    4. You believe everyone should have access to medical coverage and basic health services.

    5. Listening to Rush Limbaugh and other populists talk radio hosts makes you sick to your stomach.

Define "better." Would you prefer that there were only volunteer fire departments? How would that work in a real city?

Bill, I agree with you, that the govt should support fire depts and ect. As the job of the govt is to protect from enemies (of which fire could be considered)
I think Bob Smith (and I know him personally) is talking about spending money for expenditures such as welfare and other govt give a way programs.
I believe that that is the job of churches and other social agcys.

I suspect Smith is talking about the dictatorial Federal Government not local or state governments!

OK, the federal govt is very wasteful. On the other hand, if citizens were better at spending their own money would the real estate market have crashed?

Are the half of all credit card holders who carry an average $8000 balance better at spending their money than the govt?

If there was no Social Security and the typical Republican <G> had been managing their retirement savings would they be better off after this economic mess occurred?:saint:

The government set up the real estate market crash by requiring banks to lend to those who were unfit to borrow. Those borrowers drove up the market prices. Then when those borrowers defaulted in high numbers they drove down the market price.

My neighbor can't take my money to pay his debts. The government can and does.

I can and do. I have never included social security in my retirement planning.

Saving your money under a mattress will soon look like the smart thing to do when they start raising the age to collect social security and concurrently start decreasing the benefits while raising the tax on social security income on your personal tax return.

So we should all give the government everything...and since they know best for us, they'll give us what they think we need.

Now that's brilliant. By they way...You don't have any athletic wear with CCCP on it, do you? Just wondering...

For the life of me, I can't figure out why you complain about Lincoln and how he attacked our freedoms...and then you propose ceding our freedoms over to a despotic government.

    Pick one, already.

Urban myth. It was the people with conventional loans that created the bubble and had the greater default problem.

Note the biggest jump occurred between 1950-1960, the years of successful union thuggery when the people with good union jobs were receiving the benefits of increased productivity and could count on doing better every year.

Why on Earth would somebody who believes in these things be a Republican when the GOP abandoned these principles years ago?

Actually, fire departments are run at the local and county level, not by the federal government.

Nope. The same ones who were idiots before are still idiots now... only their ranks have grown. The same ones are here, too.

    Nice cherry-picking.

What you fail to mention is that those chickens came home to roost...and years later, all those boom years with their fat union deals has bankrupted Detroit, and once-great entities like GM and all the previous incantations of Chrysler. Thank your union buddies for those lost jobs and destroyed communities.

Or did you conveniently forget that information?

Sure it does in small communities. Would not have worked in NYC on 9/11.

Interesting that it is possible to support every tenet of both lists at once.
