The news reports that the President and his family will be attending Nineteenth Street Baptist Church for Easter services. I checked their website, and they belong to the DC Baptist Convention. The DC Baptist Convention says that it is affiliated with :

American Baptist Churches, USA AND the
    Southern Baptist Convention AND the
    Progressive National Baptist Convention.

How and why would an association want to do this? I don't know much about the Progressive Nationals, but how could you be a "member in good standing" of the ABC and the SBC at the same time? Sounds like an incompatable mix to me.

This is not that rare. In our area, some predominantly African-American Baptist churches will have dual affiliation: National Baptist Convention and SBC.

Some SBC churches will also identify with the more liberal Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

Why would one find that all that strange?? The DC Convention (which is effectively a de facto 'state' convention) is entirely autonomous, in its own areas. I suspect (but have no particular knowledge) that the DC Convention would even likely exceed even some of the 'smaller' 'SBC' affiliated conventions, such as that of Wyoming, in terms of the number of churches, with whom she is associated.

And all three of these 'national' conventions are rooted in the same basic heritage, as 'descendants' of the Triennial Baptist Convention of almost two centuries ago.

However, the 'relationship' between the DC convention, and the SBC does seems to be somewhat more strained, these days, than it once was.

Have a really great 'Resurrection Day', everyone.

Both types of these above affiliations are also true of some churches more toward the Central KY area, as well.
