Preaching a funeral

    We're without a pastor. I'm chairman of deacons. I had to preach a funeral for the first time.

    The funeral home director mentioned a "committal". What is that? We had no graveside service since the deceased wanted to be cremated.

    What is it? When does one do it?

    BTW, after much prayer and speaking with the other deacons and with our associational missionary, I'm going to become a licensed minister (not ordained). I could be a lay minister for the rest of my life, or God could call me into the full time pastorate.

    In any case, there are some things I don't know and "a committal" is one of them.

    In the normal sense of the word, the committal is when the remains are put into the ground.. The person may have been cremated but they still may be put into a vault or even into the ground. If there is a question, tell the funeral director about your situation and get their help. They do this for a living and have always been alot of help to me in funerals. Also ask your Associational misionary or another local pastor for help.

    Thank you, Tom. I've never preached a funeral so I'm sure I have many of the same questions as Jkdbuck.
