moving old gravestones?

I don't think it's a moral problem. I mean, it isn't as though he's descrating a gravesite.

I'm sure your county or even your town has a historical society. I would call them for advice.

Where we live, there were several battles of the Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War, so we have graveyards all over the place. Most are not well marked at all.

 

There are laws that cover some of this in the Commonwealth of KY. However, since cemeteries can be moved, at times etc., I am not sure of the full extent to which this is spelled out.

However, I have yet to hear of one the residents of any cemetery object to the site being cleaned up, and made a bit more visually pleasing, even if a stone were not to be replaced in the exact same location, to the inch, that I can recall.

Wouldn't an archaeological 'dig' at some early or pre-historic burial site, be 'desecrating' by definition? That is done on a regular basis, I believe.

Not far from where I live-------is a historical site called DeSoto Caveren---they give guided tours through the cave-------well-------the guide said while my wife and I were touring that several years ago there was a group of Archaeologists who was doing a "dig" in the caveran and unearthed an old grave-------inside the cave-------and recovered the bones and took them with them to their lab for further study

A group of Indians-----found out about the group of archaelogists and got all "ticked off" because they said the grave site was sacred and they got a court order that made the archaelogists give the bones to the Indians------when the Indians(I believe they were from the Coosa tribe)------the Chief, Medicine man and another tribesman----took the bones back to the cavaren-------and went in----themselves alone-------and buried the bones again-------and to this day---noone knows where they buried the bones found by those Archaelogists.

 

I agree with you Ed, I've always wondered just how long do I have to be dead before it's ok for people to legally dig up my grave and take whatever may be burried in there. (I've seen people bury favorite objects, bibles, family photos...)

The answer to your question Donna is that after 100 years you can legally resell a grave plot. They do it on a regular basis in upstate New York, due to a lack of available space.
