Cinco De Mayo - Why is it celebrated here?

I do not believe it has anything do with the independence of Mexico, but what is wrong with an immigrant community celebrating holidays from the home land? Wouldn't you celebrate July 4th if you lived overseas?

As an American missionary, my family and I still celebrate thanksgiving and the forth of July. These days are important to us. We at the same time recognize the Argentine holidays and celebrate with them.

 

:thumbs: X 2!! When we were in Mexico I flew the Mexican Flag on Sept 16 and the American flag on July 4 and no one in Mexico ever complained.

 

Because it's P.C. Here in Texas, Texas Independence Day and San Jacinto Day went by with hardly a word. (We don't want to offend the Mexicans.) But come the 5th of May and, whoo hoo, let's fiesta!

 

It's kind of dumb really... the Mexicans were going broke fighting Spain, and France saw an opportunity to either help or take advantage of them, depending on your view. France loaned them alot of money, but then when it came time to repay it, Mexico refused, probably because they couldn't. So France decides they're going to get repaid one way or another so they come invade, I believe with the idea that they're going to take over the country.

On one of the first battles, a small amount of poorly equipped and trained Mexican group repeled a large well trained French army division, and it wasn't long before France went back home and cut their losses. Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of winning this particular battle. I say it's dumb because it's almost like celebrating not having to repay your debts.

It's popular here just because people want a reason to party. It's really not all that popular in Mexico. The Americanized border towns it is, but in hardcore Mexico it's just not a big thing.

 

When my bride got in from work this morning, she told me I needed to clean out the refrigerator, as we had not done so for a couple of weeks.

While emptying the food, I noticed a partial jar of salad dressing that appeared to have been overlooked for some time, and was questionable at best, IMO.

I held it up and asked, "What should I do with this jar of dressing?"

With a scowl, she pointed toward the garbage disposal and said, "You know what to do with that!"

So in order to keep her happy, I proceeded to

Same as St. Patrick's Day: just another excuse to drink.

 

If I still lived in Texas, I'd have to organize a celebration of those days just to spite the PC crowd. Who cares if Mexicans are offended. If they're offended, then they should leave. They knew who we were when they came here, and yet, they still chose to come here.

Lol! you would make a good argentine! They will find any occasion one for celebration.

 

It was, according to my bride!

Our 'tin' wedding anniversary is coming up this Friday, so I plan on keeping her happy.

And I 'strongly' suspect that had the condition of our 'fridge' been the subject of one of your famous polls among BB members upon observation,

the overwhelming vote would definitely have been "Necessary!"

You're forgetting- In most of South Texas, Arizona, Nevada and California...

... the MEXICANS WERE here before "we" were!

 

Which they were more than happy to give over once we won the war.

How ever Its ominous that Mexico's independence day is like the communist countries of old May Days.

 

Cinco De Mayo - Why is it celebrated here?

Because, although it's not generally known, when the Titanic went down on April 14, 1912, it had a secret cargo of a mayonnaise of a secret recipe which was going to be shipped to every new El Chico restaurant for one of their new dishes of (secret, of course) ingredients. After the shipments were late, the company management investigated and found out what happened, then decided that new secret recipe would have ruined them anyway. So on that day they declared it should be celebrated as Sinko de Mayo.

 

My last name is Mayo...seriously...
