Note to MODs; The following came from a site with no copywrite. Found the test interesting... just slightly more complex than the questions I was acustom to answering on tests in grade school and junior high.

    8th Grade Test from 1895

This is the eighth-grade final exam from 1895 from Salina, Kansas. It was taken from the original document on file at the Smoky Valley Genealogical Society and Library in Salina, Kansas and reprinted by the Salina Journal.

    5. Find cost of 6720 lbs. coal at $6.00 per ton.

    6. Find the interest of $512.60 for 8 months and 18 days at 7 percent.

    7. What is the cost of 40 boards 12 inches wide and 16 ft. long at $.20 per inch?

    8. Find bank discount on $300 for 90 days (no grace) at 10 percent.

    9. What is the cost of a square farm at $15 per acre, the distance around which is 640 rods?

    10. Write a Bank Check, a Promissory Note, and a Receipt.

Imagine a college student who went to public school trying to pass this test, even if the few outdated questions were modernized. Imagine their professors even being able to pass the 8th Grade. Can Americans, student and professor alike, get back up to the 8th Grade level of 1895?

I seriously doubt there is anyone in America who could pass this simple test. Some professors could pass the subjects they have a doctorate in, but they would fail the rest. This is absolute proof that the New World Odor Gang has succeeded in dumbing down the American people. Is it no wonder few Americans realize they are being led to the slaughter?

This is also listed at SNOPES: Urban Legends, status = FALSE

    http://www.snopes.com/language/document/1895exam.asp

BTW, this should be moved to the humor Forum :-( rarely is 1895 stuff to be construed as: "News/Current Events".

It sems I have seen other critical articles about this "test". Possibly, the test was for teachers. Will try to google some other sites when I get the chance.

I could have answered a lot of that test by the end of eighth grade and more by the end of high school but very little today.

By the time I graduated from high school I had a far superior education compared to my parents. My daughter graduated from high school last year and she had a better education than I did from high school.

One of the high schools I attended had about 30% of the students go onto college and most of them graduated. Another high school I attended had less than ten graduate from college. Both of them were about 1000 students in four years.

I'm afraid I would fail that test miserably. I can do a lot of that, but I could never explain it.

I had a pastor tell me that the average adult can only read at a 5th grade level. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but in the 5th grade I was a good reader. Now reading is difficult because of bad eyes.

I increased the size of the font here by 25% so I can see it.

I guess spelling is not your strong suit.

WOW! So you think that because most Americans (including myself) who are not able to pass this bogus test "for 8th graders" somehow "are being led to the slaughter"?! Talk about taking things woefully out of context ...

    Thanks, Ed Edwards (and Rippon).

What I find puzzling is that three posters who have posted on this thread, are apparently completely unaware that this "real piece of work" is really a nothing but a pile of the stuff that one will find in my 'cattle lot' and hope to avoid 'stepping in'. The three also posted on the last thread about this exact same bogus test, where this was there debunked.

    http://www.baptistboard.com/showpost.php?p=1212421&postcount=4

It was only 13 months ago, at that.

Unbelievable, how soon some forget, while I'm the one who actually has known memory problems due to some circulation issues, no less.

This 'test' is a lie, folks!!

It was garbage 13 mos. ago; it is garbage today!

    End of story!

I'm sorry about posting the test in the News and Current Events Section. I really had forgotten that it's been here before and just happened across it in my searches.

Some of the subsequent postings I made under that same subject were an effort to 'save face' for which I also apologize to you, admitting to my foolish pride.

Though my last postings imply that I set up the members on this board..... that was not my intention either.

Please forgive me. As difficult as reading must be for bad eyes... I should be more careful and thoughtful and SINCERE when posting.

    Please forgive me.

FTR, windcatcher did not have any post in the previous thread I referred to, about this, so I was not referring to him in any manner. I certainly was not implying that he was attempting to set up anyone, for I took his statements in the OP at face value.

It just shows that there are people who will believe anything in writing.

There was nothing about it to believe except I found it strikingly familiar to the tests I had in grade school and junior high.... and posted it because it was interesting ..... to me any way.... and wondered how it might compare to today.

Of course very few children will experience the 'back to basics' life style of a few generations ago which required them to know what a bushel and a peck was, or board feet for lumber.

I have some questions regarding the answers posted at that site also... but I guess I've done too much damage already... got to go post some more 'eat my hat' referances..... Credibility is important to me.... but sometimes I guess I jump the gun.

I guess I am naive! I thought the only inerrant source of information was the Bible. I suppose that Snopes now compliments that source! Is it remotely possible that Snopes is wrong?

In any event it is true that many high school and college graduates are ignorant of grammar, American history, both past and current. Take their calculators away and they are ignorant of mathematics.

Sure. But that certainly does not lessen the need for us to avoid making fools out of ourselves by NOT checking out their facts. I personally have not found them to be wrong in the instances that I have referenced them. All wisdom is not found in the Bible.

But I bet they could whip you at programming a DVR recorder or programming a computer.

That is certainly true.:tongue3: However, someone has to learn in order to give us the technology we have or improve on what we have. What happens when an electromagnetic storm [man made or natural] wipes out the computer and other electronic equipment?:BangHead:
