Learning Greek and Hebrew

    Interesting..............it's an appealing idea. I tend to agree in principle. This is somewhat parallel to what John Dobson does in his books. Reading is emphasized over parsing. See links below:

    One of the claims they make is that language can be learned much faster and in context. The idea is to learn language in context much the same way a young child learns language.

    It will be interesting to see what happens.

    How do we recapture the context of Biblical languages?

    Well, this is the best way of teaching modern languages. The idea appeals to me because of some criticisms, probably petty for most, that I have of Koine Greek and Biblical Hebrew scholarship today.

    A few days ago I read about someone asking a question about the benefits of going to Greece to learn Greek. The gentleman who teaches the languages this way responded by mentioning that modern Hebrew is much closer to OT Hebrew than modern Greek is to NT Greek.

    Back in my seminary days, I took Hebrew from D. David Garland at Southwestern. Instead of spending weeks memorizing charts and parts of speech, we quickly learned the alphabet, learned to navigate our Brown, Driver and Briggs, and started translating as a class through the Psalms.

    Garland's view was that we would learn Hebrew, not only the technical aspects but the rhythm of the language, by immersing ourselves in it instead of analyzing it. We would also get "instant" gratification (through lots of hard work) by mining jewels of insight found in the original language.

    As a result of his method, I found Hebrew much more accessible and enjoyable than Greek.
