Have been thinking for some time now about getting a compact, pocket style of bible for travel, work, etc. Have been looking at Message, NLT and NCV.
I wouldn't be using it for study purposes, just strictly for reading enjoyment and helping me to get deeper appreciation out of my study bible. Seem to be leaning to Message, but have heard some real pros and cons. Any thoughts??

I have The Message in its entirety. It has its good features but I would steer clear of it for the most part. It just takes too many liberties to say the least, even with some gems here and there.

I don't have a copy of the New Cenury Version currently. I have given some illustrated Old Testament sections of that version away to American children in the past. It had the full text and pictures too.

But I'd really have to say of those three the NLTse would be the superior choice. It is accurate and very readable. It is functionally equivalent but not nearly so much as the NCV,GNT etc. It's at the place on the continuum where many mistakenly position the TNIV.(The latter is more literal than the NLTse.)

I would go for the NLT over the other 2 (The Message and the NCV). I had an NCV once but it was too dynamic for me.

Here is a good critique of "The Message"

    Message bible??

Thanks for your feedback Rippon and Marcia. I do have several study bibles -one of my newest is the NLT - really enjoying it!!, so I'm thinking I'll probably stick with a compact version of same for consistency. I may try the Message at some point, but I'm realizing as I get into reading my NLT more and more, that I like the 'tone' better than the Message. Also, I have a JBPhillips, so that might be a better read/choice instead of Message just for quick reading.
