"And finally, just as America can never tolerate violence by extremists, we must never alter our principles. 9/11 was an enormous trauma to our country. The fear and anger that it provoked was understandable, but in some cases, it led us to act contrary to our ideals. We are taking concrete actions to change course. I have unequivocally prohibited the use of torture by the United States, and I have ordered the prison at Guantanamo Bay closed by early next year."

    <snip>

"Let me also address the issue of Iraq. Unlike Afghanistan, Iraq was a war of choice that provoked strong differences in my country and around the world. Although I believe that the Iraqi people are ultimately better off without the tyranny of Saddam Hussein, I also believe that events in Iraq have reminded America of the need to use diplomacy and build international consensus to resolve our problems whenever possible."

It is beyond disgusting that the president of the United States would make these remarks overseas, particularly before an Islamic audience to curry favor.

One thing that Obama said that I noticed was that our war was a "war of choice".

When your break it down all wars are a war of choice. A decision has to be made do I fight, or let my enemies trounce all over me? Do I take the fight to them, or allow them to bring the fight to me?

If we chose to, we could chosen to not fight for our independence. We could have chosen not to fight back when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. We could have chosen to not drop the atomic bombs to get Japan to surrender.

War is all about choices & tough decisions.

I am proud of our President for working to mend fences and demonstrate to the young Muslims that America is not the enemy.

I will give Obama credit for one thing. At least this time he chose to shake the hand of the Saudi king rather than bow to him. This time his speech made it sound like he actually had some kind of backbone. I just hope he'll be able to put some actions to his words.

I also thought it was very good that he told them and Israel that they all have to be part of the answer. Peace cannot be imposed. All of them are going to have to accept some things they do not like.l

As long as the United States is considered a Christian nation they will be actively viewed as infidels by Muslims. I suspect that the reason "bho" is well received by the audience is that they consider him to be Muslim since his father was Muslim.

That is nonsense! Iraq had been bombed for 8 years by Clinton.

That only proves the point further, it was pre-emptive ... against the principles of the USA. Obama was telling the truth. It does not matter who began it. And Bush did send in ground forces.

Other actions also violate traditional US standards.

If he is perceived as a muzzlum who joined the infidels, he's likely to have more than a shoe come flying at him in a muzzlumland setting.

I guess you two never heard of Teddy Roosevelt's invasion of Puerto Rico, or our involvement in Korea, & Vietnam, and Clinton's invasion of Kosovo. CTB's claim is just more liberal re-writing of history.

As far as Iraq goes, Bush had bi-partisan approval for that invasion.

Where is it written that it is against the principles of the United States to engage in preemptive war?

That obeisance to the overlord of Mecca and Medina some weeks back may have been a message to the "muzzlums" that things are not always what they seem. Perhaps his statement that the United States was a Muslim country was a Freudian slip.

I don't see this as hating America. I see it as finally stating that the policies of President Bush were a failure.
