Kodak Super 8 film was launched in 1965. Super 8 replaced Standard 8 film, which was launched in 1932. There were perforations along the edges of the film which created the appearance of jerky action when you played it back.

This is all that was offered in the way of home movies when I was a kid. No sound. No color until I was a teenager. Just action! We transferred our 8's onto VHS tapes a few years ago.

    Have ya been there?

Here's how a Super 8 film looks when you play it back:

If you're not familiar with the 8's, mention it to your parents; they'll know exactly what you're talking about!

I am not sure of the difference between Standard and Super.

Is this the kind of film that is shown on a projector as in the old-fashioned days before videos? My father filmed us and showed family films via a projector but I have no idea what it was called. He's gone now, so can't ask.

I'm probably too young to have ever been featured on that kind of film.

I've been filmed and have filmed using both 8mm and Super 8.

Back in the 1970s, I created amateur films with a friend and learned the art of editing (manually cutting film and rejoining it) to create scenes, and ultimately, movies from various live action takes and stop-motion animation.

The friend I worked with (I introduced him to film-making and technique) has since become a follower of Jesus and now travels the world creating films and video for a Texas-based Christian ministry. He used to scoff at my faith back in the day and now I'm pleased to see that maybe the Spirit used our time together to inspire him into an artistic career and, more importantly, a life in God. :)

Hi Marcia; yes, it is. If you're over 40, you could actually have been taped on both. We had gear for both at one time, but I mainly remember Super 8. :D

Super 8 was around when you were a kid. In fact, during the 70s & 80s, my parents took a lot of film of our family vacations, Christmas, etc. They didn't move to a VHS camcorder 'til the 90s.

Well, I voted for Standard 8 because I'm not sure about the Super 8. But I know we were filmed and we watched using an old-fashioned reel projector (I think that is what they were called). So I'm over 40 and that's all I have to say on that!
