Was the verbal boxing match between Paul and Peter over legalism that is found in Galatians before or after the Jerusalem Council that I thought had settled the matter in Acts 15?

I know that even James, the apostle who "made the motion" to nullify the keeping of the law as a prerequisite to salvation still struggled with maintaining appearances and appeasing some Judaizers himself in Acts 21.

But can someone help me with the timeline? :flower:

I know. I should have done this earlier in the week. Sorry!!

My Greek prof in siminary had the following take on Gal. 2.

Paul says in 2:2 "And it was because of a revelation that I went up (to Jerusalem)....."

This revelation occurred in Antioch in Acts 11:28 "And one of them named Agabus stood up and began to indicate by the Spirit that there would be a great famine....."

The church at Antioch sent Paul and Barnabus (and others) to Jerusalem with a relief offering for the saints in Jerusalem.

This occurred after Peter's vision and meeting with Cornelius (Acts 10), but prior to the council of Acts 15.

Paul tells us in Gal. 2:9-10 that they were recieved as brothers in Christ by the leadership in Jerusalem on that visit, and were asked only to remember the poor (v. 10) "the very thing also I was eager to do."

He was remembering the poor when he brought the relief offering.

So.... Peter then makes a trip to Antioch (after Paul's visit, but prior to the council in Acts 15), where Paul confronts him about his hypocrisy.

It could very well be this incident led to the council in Acts 15 to resolve the matter.

    Hope that helps

    peace to you:praying:

    Thank you so much!!!!! :flower:

I teach the 80 and 90 year old women in Sunday School. I'm almost literally half their age. (I know the Bible says for older women to teach the younger women, but that's in reference to marriage and family life.) The next class that they graduate to is Heaven. On Promotion Sunday.....we don't promote in my class!

They can't do much of anything anymore for the church except to bake cakes, send cards/letters, and pray. Almost half are losing their hearing. I have to talk really loud. One was a brilliant former teacher, herself. She has Alzheimer's and cannot find the lesson nor the scripture passages without help. I visited with her a couple of weeks ago in her home. I had to introduce myself several times. :tear:

I've been teaching them for about 12 years. At least 10 of them have died in that time period. 4 are now in the nursing home. And 8 that remain are feeble.

But they have a love for the Lord that is immeasurable. They are extremely smart when it comes to the Bible and even though they forgotten more than all of us at the BB combined know right now, they LOVE to learn more and more about the Bible.

I can't give them enough. The deeper we dig, the more they like it.

Sunday mornings from 9:15-10:15 is one of the highlights of my week.

    Thanks again!!!!!

There are two views that exist and both as as you state "before" and "after". JD gives one (before) which he learned in school and I was taught by my profs the other as well, which is 'after' and a majority of scholars agree (this doesn't really mean they are right, just that the concensus is that it happened after). It reads contextually much more fluid as well as in the time line.

What a wonderful ministry you have! Our seasoned citizens do not get enough credit for a life of dedication to our Lord. It must be a real blessing and a bittersweet ministry when some become ill or go to their heavenly Father.

I have prayed for you and your class for tommorrow. May Almighty God annoint you with Holy Spirit and fill you with wisdom.

    God bless

    peace to you:praying:

    Ha!! LOL

I probably won't give them a time-line until I can study this more. We just started Galatians last week.

My problem with the "after" idea is why did Peter fall away from what he knew to be true and that great speech in made in Acts 15 that just shut everybody up - literally!!

I'll just ponder all of this some more!

Thanks. I consider the whole thing a privilege.

It's made me look at life much differently.
