Last night, when I was out walking my dog, I was thinking about Dr. Ergun Caner (President of Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary). I was trying to remember if Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary's homepage said that he had earned an MA-History degree from Criswell College. I just checked and I was correct (see here). However, Criswell College does not currently offer a MA-History degree. At this time all they offer is a Master of Arts in Theological and Biblical Studies with a Systematic/Historical Theology track (here).

    --Does anyone here know if:

    A. This was the degree Caner is referring to as an MA-History.
    B. Criswell College once offered an MA-History degree (or similar degree).

If the answer is "A", no big deal. After all, an MA degree in Theological and Biblical Studies with a Systematic/Historical Theology track is a "church history" version of the MA-History degree. For example, Liberty University offers a Master of Arts in Religious Studies studies degree with a Church History concentration. Take away all the extra wording and that is really an MA-History degree (here). Other seminaries do the same thing.

If the answer is "B", does anyone know why Criswell stopped offering the MA-History degree? I was glad to see Liberty University start a MA-History program (here) and I hope to see many other Christian schools follow them. We need more Christian historians than we currently have.

Martin, I wouldn't even know where to look for this information. You will probably have to do your own research on this one.

Why not just email him and ask him?

==I did not ask if anyone cared, I just asked if anyone knew the answer.

Caring would lead to knowing in most cases. Anyway why would you even care?

Perhaps it's because Martin thinks that Dr. Caner might not have a sufficient theological background.

That would be interesting. Why would Dr. Caner concern him? What agenda would drive such idiocy?

==I do not question Dr. Caner's theological education/training. While I do disagree with him on some points I agree with and admire his positions and stances on many issues. Dr. Caner's educational background is highly respectable and beyond question (M.A., The Criswell College, M.Div., ThM., Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, ThD., University of South Africa). My question was about Criswell College and not Dr. Caner. I just used Dr. Caner as an example since it was his bio that raised the question in my mind.

Just to point out I did not say you did. Nor did I conclude that while not saying it. I just responded to the post.
