The entire story is at http://bpnews.net/BPnews.asp?ID=30834

WASHINGTON (BP)--Democrats may control the White House and Congress, but a new survey says the country isn't getting more liberal -- in fact, the opposite may be true.

The Gallup survey of 1,011 adults found that 39 percent of American adults say their "views on political issues" have grown more conservative in recent years, compared to 18 percent who say their views have grown more liberal and 42 percent who say their views have not changed. The poll was conducted June 14-17.

In fact, all three political identity groups show that adults are more likely to have grown more conservative than liberal. Among Republicans, 47 percent say they are more conservative and 9 percent more liberal. For Independents, it's 37 percent (more conservative) and 19 percent (more liberal), and for Democrats, 34 percent (more conservative) and 23 percent (more liberal).

The survey complements Gallup data released in June showing that conservatives outnumber liberals by a nearly 2-to-1 margin -- 40 percent to 21 percent -- when Americans are asked to label their political views. Thirty-five percent call themselves moderates.

But it's too early to say America is a solidly conservative nation. On some issues, including abortion and gun control, Americans have grown more conservative since Republicans last won a national election in 2004, while on others -- such as on immigration -- Americans seem to have become more liberal, Gallup data shows.

This is no surprise to most people.

Their mouths say one thing and their votes say another.

Also, their TV remotes are voting liberal. Where's a conservative comedian that hosts a prime time talk show?

It'll probably swing back and forth. This isn't too surprising, particularly with the documented evidence that the majority of Americans are against unfettered access to abortion. After 8 years of President Obama the trend will probably be more conservative.

Now conservative doesn't equal Christian (if you've ever attended a Republican gala you'll see more carnality than you'd expect) but it does present an opportunity to engage the lost at a common point of reference. :)

Bingo Bob!!! You would have to get all the definitions of conservative to count this as a victory. Remember, these are the same people who want the public health option though they overwhelmingly say they won't join.

The country has been and is basically conservative. The election of President Obama does not reflect the makeup of the American people. He was elected as a backlash against George Bush and the Republican Congress for their inept, liberal agenda. Had Bush done his job, this guy would have never been elected.

For years in most states it has been easier for a girl to get an abortion than an aspirin.

What I find interesting is where the teenage pregnancy rates and abortion rates are the highest. (http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/2006/09/12/USTPstats.pdf)

I wonder if there is any correlation between being conservative and being liberal in terms of the statistics?

Like they say, if anyone stays in long enough he will make everyone mad because he will make decisions that eventually will affect everyone.

Of course we are not getting more conservative. All one has to do is look around.

As of today, DC recognizes gay marriages performed elsewhere and soon will have allow gay marriage.

The restrictions on stem cell research have been lifted.

It is normal for people to live together and have children before marriage. In fact, I think this is more common than marriage.

If anything, we are getting more liberal, at least morally. Politics is irrelevant to the moral breakdown.

    I disagree

    obtained by the few.
Obtained by the few and not an indicator of the general public

One issue that does not indicate an over all move to the left.

And yet your first two examples were obtained through politics by the few who support them.

Well, it's not a few in DC. DC is very liberal

I am not sure what you mean by politics - you mean the political process? That is not what I meant by politics.

If we are getting more conservative, I'd hate to see what less conservative is!

I don't know who "they" is, but Bush was not in long enough to make conservatives happy.

"They" is people in general. It is the thought that if someone stays in long enough and does what is right eventually everyone will be disappointed because you cannot please everyone all of the time.

For example if in a church your pastor said on Sunday that everyone was going to be held accountable for sharing their faith in the next year and was going to be trained to make disciples. How many would be happy and who would be happy?

I think you are right in that we do have an apathetic majority.
