The KJV has the curious rendering of : Be of good courage, and let us play the men... (2 Samuel 10:12)

Coverdale : Take a good corage vnto the, and let us be strong...

Geneva : Be strong & let us be valiant ...

Young's Literal : be strong and strengthen thyself...

Darby : Be strong, and let us shew ourselves valiant ...

NASBU : Be strong, and let us show ourselves courageous...

NET Bible : Be strong. Let's fight bravely ...

HCSB : Be strong! We must prove ourselves strong ...

NLTse : Be courageous! Let us fight bravely ...

TNIV : Be strong, and let us fight bravely ...

Methinks the KJV was too idiomatic here. It didn't need to be so dynamic.

1 Samuel 4:9 : Be strong, and quit yourselves like men ... quit yourselves like men and fight.

1 Corinthians 16:13 : Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.

Certainly some rather loose phraseology being employed in the KJV in these instances.

I know. I was so confused today by those literates over at sportinglife.com: "Rangers acquitted themselves well against league opposition".
