What is your favorite Study Bible and why?

My current study Bible has no cross-references and no notes, just a one inch margin on all sides of the print, for my personal notes. I wouldn't mind having a good study Bible, I just haven't found one I like, I've tried several and haven't been satisfied.

 

I have 2 favorites:

Life Application - Lots of in-text maps, practical applications

Scofield III - Reformatted New Scofield, (with the real KJV text instead of the revised text used in the earlier New Scofield, although available in other versions). Places many of the notes in chart format, text boxes for emphasis, etc. The whole reformat is much easier to use.

I do occaissionally use some of the questions from the Serendipity Study Bible. Sometimes I use the given questions as thought-provokers for my own questions.

 

I use the The Scofield Study Bible III, Holman Christian Standard Bible for daily reading, the notes and headings really support daily reading.

The Thompson Chain Reference Bible is very good for studying a subject (togehter with the Naves)

For quick check when I am at the computer I use The ESV study Bible Online. The Notes are sound and bery good for checking av passage, but I think there may to much of them to use for daily reading. At the computer I sometimes check words at the Linked Word Projekt. I also have Accordance software.

 

NASB 95 Word Study Edition- I like the translation style for its literalness and accuracy. More translation and less interpretation. The study notes are not bias toward any denomination. They put everything in a "general" Christian sense. Good for any denomination. This is my main study Bible

Amplified Bible - As a secondary study tool. There is nothing "lost" in this translation.

NET Bible - Take a look at the notes and its obvious why anyone would want it.

Then I use the following

Then I'm in a constant process of learning Greek.

 

I have owned the: NIV Study Bible, NASB Study Bible (basically the Zondervan notes with the NASB text), Scofield, Oxford Annotated,Inductive Study Bible, Naves (the actual study bible, not the Topical thingy) and a few more I cant recall at the moment...

My favorite is the one I'm using now, The Thompson Chain. The only thing I would do to change it would be to take all the 'helps' out of the back, otherwise its the almost perfect study bible for me.

 

I use my TNIV, NRSV, and NLT and so on, with a few tools here and there.

 

My favorite study Bible is the "New Defender's Study Bible" done by Dr. Henry M. Morris just before he passed away. While I don't agree with everything that Dr, Morris writes, he has some insights that I have not seen before and a way of presenting information that "clicks" with me.

 

I like the old Scofield, I don't agree with everything he says in the notes. But it has one of the best cross references I seen in a bible.

I like the NIV Study Bible - which has been adapted to the KJV, NASB, and now the TNIV. I like the detailed book introductions, outlines ... ect. ect. ect.

I also like the Life Application KJV I have.

 

My favorite Bible is the one on my iPhone.

 

Olive tree? I have their ESV study bundle and their ESV study Bible on my iPod Touch.

 

The ESV Study Bible is quickly climbing in my opinion. Notes are excellent and the articles and contributor are a who's who of the Bible trusting world. It's quickly becoming the first study Bible I pull off the shelves. But it weighs a metric ton. A good friend uses it as his pulpit Bible. I constantly wonder if his church minds that he has to use a wheelbarrell to carry the thing to the pulpit. :tongue3:

The Disciple's Study Bible from Holman is very good. Theologically centered notes. I was given this at my ordination.

The NIV/NASB/KJV study Bible from Zondervan has good notes as well. I've used this for almost twenty years.

So true...My ESV Study Bible has been "appropriated" by my wife. I notice it stays on the kitchen table, though.

I've been very happy with my two reading bibles -- the Cambridge Goatskin NIV Single Column format and the Allan ESV in Highland Goatskin.

The NIV has zero notes and it's a pleasure to read the text, without being pulled to notes every other verse.

The Allan is just plain ridiculously good to hold. The ESV text is 2 column format and there are reference notes in the center which have become surprisingly helpful.

I used a "Spirit of the Reformation" NKJV for about 3 years prior to that. The notes were helpful, well written, and yet unintrusive.

 

My favorite is The Ryrie Study Bible Expanded Edition(KJV). I find the notes, maps, among other thing to be very helpful. He is one of my favorite theologians.

 

Reformation Study Bible in ESV

 

A few days I got the Reformation Study Bible ESV on my iPod Touch. I like the notes and especially the theological articles. It is perhaps more reformed than me, but it really useful as reference. I like the ESV translation.

 

I am using a Nelson NKJV Study Bible right now. I think the notes are really good. I also like the NASB Thompson Chain. These are my two favorites (the NASB is my favorite version and the one we were told to use for the NT course in seminary).

In the past, I have used the NIV Study Bible (as a new believer), the Ryrie Study Bible, Scofield II, and the John MacArthur Study Bible.

 

I recently picked up an ESV Study Bible and it's the best purchase I've ever made. I love it.

 

I like the John MacArthur Study Bible the best for context, history and eschatology. I like the NIV Study Bible the best for soteriology.
