    FROM AOL
In case the link is deleted here is the info:

    by Sara Bonisteel

An 8-year-old Miami public school student asks why she can't have the healthy school lunch option enjoyed by President Obama's daughters, Malia and Sasha, in a new ad targeting Washington lawmakers

President Obama's daughters have been drawn into the debate about healthy school lunches in a new advertisement targeting Washington's lawmakers.

In 14 advertisements placed throughout Union Station near Capitol Hill, 8-year-old Jasmine Messiah of Miami asks "President Obama's daughters get healthy school lunches. Why don't I?"

Click on the gallery at the end of the article to see what other kids are eating for their lunches around the world.

The ads are sponsored by Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a nonprofit that wants the Child Nutrition Act to be amended to require schools serve more low-fat vegetarian lunch options as well as fruits and vegetables.

Jasmine, a vegetarian and the daughter of a scientist who studies childhood obesity, has written her congressmen as well first daughters Malia and Sasha asking for better school lunches.

In the letter to the Obama daughters, obtained by AOL Food, Jasmine says: "The problem is that most students eat unhealthy foods, like hot dogs, pepperoni pizza, ham sandwiches and cheeseburgers everyday at school. A lot of schools, including mine, don't offer enough healthy fruits, vegetables and vegetarian meals."

She urges the Obama girls to sign a petition for better school meals at HealthySchoolLunches.org.

Malia and Sasha attend the private school Sidwell Friends in Washington, D.C. According to its Web site, the school serves vegetarian entrées such as vegetable strata, curried tofu salad and grilled veggie wraps. Desserts at the school are fresh fruit options.

"You can go a mile away to the public school in Washington, D.C., and there's no such choice," Dr. Neal Barnard, the president of the Physicians Committee, tells AOL Food. "It's bologna sandwich or if you're looking for something healthier, nothing; it might be a hot dog or nothing; chicken nuggets one day or nothing."

Hmm..I send my kids to school each day with a bag lunch. Imagine that...I have control over what my kids eat. Jasmine Messiah's parents should be ashamed that they are using her as a tool in this political agenda they have. If they were so concerned, why don't they just pack little Jasmine's lunch?

Propaganda tactics such as this only have short-term effects. Appealing to emotions (which sway with the winds of change) isn't productive. If they really want change in their school lunch system, they need to employ more long-term effective measures, such as research into long term cost-effectiveness of more nutritious meals and effective ways to teach children and their parents to eat better in the first place.

People will act when they know that even though the cost may rise for fresher foods the long term costs of health care for children will decrease because children are healthier. And if you offer parenting classes to teach how to cook healthly foods on a tight budget, then the children will appreciate the healthier meals at school.

    Here's the problem.

Most all school systems lose money every year in their food services. They have for years. Many children bring lunches and that's fine. That's their business.

So, to entice those who don't bring their lunches to eat in the cafeteria everyday, school tend to serve what the children want and what many of them are getting at home - pizza, hamburgers, and the like.

This ad makes me angry. As a teacher and as a citizen.

The president's children and this particular child in the ad should NOT be pawns in any political or social endeavor.

    Never.

It's often difficult to pack a healthy lunch. I've lived in two different places with two different weather extremes.

In one, home-packed lunches froze on the walk to school.
In the other, sweltering heat and humidity, combined with no refrigeration for the kids at school and having to keep it stored in a hot locker (ice packs only last so long), made packing anything perishable a non-option. You can only have so non-perishable lunch options!

It's not unreasonable to request that when you're giving your kids money to buy food at a place of learning, they have healthy choices. Making good decisions and being healthy is part of what schools teach. (or should)

I am all in favor of providing healthy choices at schools.

I am against dragging anyones kids into the fight. I think healthy choices in schools is a topic that stands on its own merits.

In private schools like the Obama children, they can put whatever they choose on the menu. We shouldn't force Muslim schools to serve pork and as long as it's their money, buy what you want.

The next question is how much more do we want to pay in taxes to make these choices available in public schools? I am willing to pay to decrease obesity which leads to many complications later in life. I think its a great investment in our future.

    The group's real agenda:

    Recommended Changes

"PCRM is calling on the USDA to . . . discontinue buying beef, pork, chicken, butter, cheese"

"Processed food items containing alternative protein products such as vegetarian burgers can now replace 100 percent of the animal protein in the school lunch"

Never a seen a tofu deer, hog, turkey walk past my blind. But I would bet my special made .270's would not leave much to eat of it.
Never seen a tofu quail, dove or pheasant either. But I bet there wouldn't be much left of them from my specials either.
Why is it that people keep trying to tell me what to eat when God says I can eat what I want?
(Great! Now I'm hungry! Now I need to fry up some backstrap in bacon drippings and have some stuffed clams as an appetizer. Along with a good Texas sweet wine.)
Disclaimer: If you are disgusted by having a red wine with sea food...tough! I eats and drinks what I want!

I have to admit I liked Palin statement, "we eat meat therefore we hunt"!

I don't care if they put a veggie burger on the menu for others but don't touch my beef...

Absolutely! Veggie burgers for all that want them. My Aunt and Uncle are vegetarians and we get along just fine at Thanksgiving. I don't try to shove a turkey leg down their throat and they don't try to shove broccoli down mine! But some of their other casseroles are great!

Those are good things. The government is trying to take those things away from our kids. You got to have some kind of meat whether its beef, pork, or chicken (chicken is probably the healthiest out of the three). Cheese makes everything taste good. Butter I could do without.

We stayed at a boarding house up by Rushmore of some people who were vegans. In the morning they made French toast with non-dairy milk (soy I think), some kind of sausage that wasn't meat etc... You could tell be everyones faces it sucked. I went back to our room and got a can of Vienna sausage, poured the juice out in their sink, moved my French toast to the side and dumped the sausages on my plate. I took out a pack of crackers and asked everyone, "anybody want some". All the guys said YES... I ended up getting a couple of more cans and big block of Cheddar we had in the cooler. Man was my wife mad. That was one long ride home...

My Wife has cooked for several school districts. Half the food they serve is tossed in the garbage - the healthy half.

Some families don't have the option of sending a bag lunch and depend on free lunch, which is the high fat, low nutrition the ad claims. But I agree, they need to leave his kids out of it.

That's baloney. Every family in the US has the ability to feed their own kids. No family in the US needs to depend on the government to feed their kids. Yes, some times a family falls on hard times and in those cases private charity, churches, friends, and family should help out. People that receive free lunch for their kids month after month and year after year are lazy and not willing to work enough to support themselves and their kids. The majority of those same people that take the free lunches have no problem purchases things like alcohol, tabacco, blockbuster movies, CDs, stupidily high priced clothing, etc.

    You are so judgmental!

I guess you have met half of the poor in order for you to make such an ignorant statement. Be careful, or God may let you see what poverty is really like.
