Why did we come to this country? Rarely do we ever stop for a moment in our busy days at work to wonder why we, or our parents or grandparents, came to this country. But with the U.S. at a crossroad and many of our ancestral homes facing turmoil, perhaps it makes sense to contemplate whether anything besides money drove Hispanics to this country.

Here at home, our economy is hurting. Some states, including the biggest (California), have double-digit unemployment. We are living through economic turmoil not seen in decades. In response, our government is writing checks to supposedly "stimulate" our economy, although nobody knows how we're going to pay for it all. And worse, it's not working.

As if that weren't enough, Congress has its sights on a massively long wish list of legislative goodies. From universal healthcare to combating global warming to universal pre-kindergarten education, this Congress and this president are promising us the world.

Of course, the old idiom is correct: There is never a free lunch. What does Washington want in return? Among other things, our freedom.

It should be obvious to anyone who takes an objective look at the actions of the government. Government is like a wild beast. Try to appease it with a bit of meat and it will insist on more and more, until it ultimately consumes you. No government is a producer. All governments are consumers of the results of the labor of the governed. The more the governed produce, the more the government takes.

With my Libertarian friends, "more freedom" seems to mean less taxes and legal pot. OK, it is a given that most people hate taxes. What ELSE does more freedom mean to Baptists if not smoking dope? You want to be permitted to live, work, go to church where you want? Own guns and write nasty letters to the editor? Marry whom you chose? Start your own political party? Start a company? Pass out tracts? Run for office?

I live in a city and we only have one bathroom. The only thing I can't do that I might want to do is pee off the back deck during daylight hours. OK, if pot is ever legalized I will give it a try.

Religious freedom is the reason many come to this nation. Yes, many come for the prosperity, but religious freedom is the seed of prosperity.

Enjoy it while you can. Sharia law is coming! Then we can live like they do on Afghanistan.

That's one of the few causes that you and I would be on the same side for. But religious freedom means the freedom for all to worship or not worship as they choose. It does not mean saying a government designated prayer in schools or placing the Te

This is exactly what the government wants. It wants your ability to think for yourself, it wants the drive in you to be independent and self sufficient, it wants you to forget about things like liberty, freedom and heritage. The government wants to dumb us all down into one giant strung out blob of humanity. In other words, they want your very soul.
