As far as laptop finishes go, I've heard that gray finishes around the keyboard will come off with time (from using the mouse pad, the pad buttons, and having your palms on it a lot). Or that it would get discolored. Any truth to this? Never owned one that wasn't black.

Not crazy about those glossy black finishes. shows the least little smudge.

Hope it's clear what I'm asking, by the way.

I've had several over the years and have never had a problem. The one I had to take apart was gray plastic all the way through and would think most would be but just a guess.

Couple of the units were well used when I got hold of them.

To build off what exscentric said, it depends on the plastic itself. If the rim is actually plastic and not painted then it will wear fine. If it is painted it can very well wear off. If it is a custom job many customizer can add a few coats of clear coat if requested (well worth the extra investment).

The only real place I see wear on my wife's lappy is the hand rest area below the keyboard, though.

I had one that was obviously painted. The paint began to flake off after the first month, by six months it looked pretty bad.

I think it is more of the molded plastic as opposed to a painted matte. Not entirely sure.

What kind is that and how old is it? What color was it initially?

Her's is a Dell Inspirion and is about four years old. The finish is not wearing off of it, but you can tell when the heals of the hands rest on it.
