Yep Crabby, those evil, racist Republicans are at it again. And, yet I bet you would have voted for Senator Byrd. Now there's a true racist politician. He changed his message with the times just like George Wallace did. I bet you would have voted for that piece of work too.

What veiled insults you throw out. But that's ok, I consider the source.

The conservatives here have gone on and on about Obama being a racist with far less evidence. Thought you might be honest enough to cirticize this lady as well. But instead you, in a subtle way, defend and thus are agreeing with her statement. My guess is you joined this chorus about Obama, but I am not going to waste the time looking through past threads to be sure.

I cannot believe that anyone in public office would be stupid enough to make such a statement. That some feel this way does not surprise me. But to be dumb enough to make such a statement, that does surprise me. To me, regardless of party, such a show of ignorance, disqualifies that person from being smart enough to be in office.

Obama was elected because he is black. He is supported because he is black. Any criticism of him is quickly dismissed as racism. Socialist is now the new N-word.

    Jenkins is absolutely right.

I love how CTB will completely ignore legitimate, obvious, and well-thought out reasons that Obama is not good for the country.

Instead of dialoging on those, he finds some obscure stupid comment, and then pulls his high-and-mighty act.

He is completely intellectually dishonest, and I think he knows it.

While I disagree with most everything CTB says, Rep Jenkins was stupid in her choice of words.

Byrd and Wallace were both racists. The change was the right thing for both of them to do. But to paint all Republicans with this brush is like painting all Democrats as if they were all like Rep. Maxine Waters.

Well, isn't this interesting. People can call Obama or others they consider 'liberal' all kinds of names, negative ones of course. But if a person gives a link to a news article that shows a Republican or conservative in a bad light they are to be condemned.

This is not an obscure article. It was a lead article.

I did not paint all Republicans as racist and neither did the article. This lady did the damage all on her own.

Now, be as considerate to Obama as you want others to be with this lady. OK?

    CTB,
Please don't act like you aren't doing the same thing as you accuse others are doing. Your first line was

Your brush is as broad as any one elses.

    Is she a Republican? Yes.
Did the article or I say "all Republicians"? No

Not a broad bruch. A brush painting one person ... actually she painted herself.

I find it interesting you are defending the indefensible.

With this, I am out of this... but if you had bothered to read my first post, you'll find that I didn't defend it at all.

The phrase "great white hope" is obviously a pop culture reference. There's no need to get worked up over it. I'd feel the same way if a democrat had said it in regards to an office filled by a black republican, though I suspect some would not.

ROFL ... what a great line considering the context. Very good one.

Has anyone stopped to think that the remarks of Rep.Jenkins regarding "a great white hope" were metaphorical rather than literal; otherwise you may be accusing the Bible and its Author of being racist:

Psalms 51:7. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Lamentations 4:7. Her Nazarites were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was of sapphire:

Not sure what the controversy is here.

"The Great White Hope" was a fictional play which the writer is quoted as saying was about a man pitted against society - not racism.

I do find it ironic that the complaint against the use of the phrase would be coming from Crabby who has insensitively used expressions such as "banana repbulic" on this board.

Guys, all she's saying is that the Republican candidate needs to be one who is immune to "racist" cavils of the left, and it was said in the manner proportionate to the race cards they play. It's time someone stopped pussy-footing around these Sharptonesque antogonists and met them head on.

Yes, I agree with that analysis.

The problem is there are many who reflexively see racism where it does not exist - like the OP.

If you did a bit more study, you would know this came from a racist mantra used by the media early in the 20th Century. A black boxer, Jack Johnson, was the boxing champion, and the media wanted to prove that he was inferior by getting a white boxer who could beat him...the Great White Hope. Your take on this is wrong.

    Wikipedia reports:

In 1910, former undefeated heavyweight champion James J. Jeffries came out of retirement and said "I am going into this fight for the sole purpose of proving that a white man is better than a Negro".[2] Jeffries had not fought in six years and had to lose around 100 lb (45 kg) to try to get back to his championship fighting weight.

The fight took place on July 4, 1910 in front of 22,000 people, at a ring built just for the occasion in downtown Reno, Nevada, and the ringside band played "All coons look alike to me". The fight had become a hotbed of racial tension, and the promoters incited the all-white crowd to chant "kill the nigger".[3] Johnson, however, proved stronger and more nimble than Jeffries. In the 15th round, after Jeffries had been knocked down twice for the first time in his career, his people called it quits to prevent Johnson from knocking him out.

The "Fight of the Century" earned Johnson $225,000 and silenced the critics, who had belittled Johnson's previous victory over Tommy Burns as "empty," claiming that Burns was a false champion since Jeffries had retired undefeated.
