I trust this will stay in the politics area since it will probably degenerate into a political battle

I'm working on I Peter 2.17 "Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king." Since this board has some real dislikers of a certain person whom shall remain unnamed due to his many misspellings  I thought it might challenge us (I use us because I tend to agree with most of you about him.) to list just how we can "honor" the President when he is -- shall we say dishonorable?

This is serious, I have been a bit convicted about my feelings toward him, not that my evaluation has changed, but how do we honor him?

The honor all men is an aorist tense while the other three items are present tenses.

Any thoughts. I am a great list maker when it comes to application of a passage, but I must admit this one stumps me, and even that does not honor the office :type:

On another note, there are a couple commentaries that suggest when it says honor all men that it relates to honor them as honor is due, yet not one translation I checked give any hint of the added thought. Has anyone dealt with this, or have any thoughts.

    Romans 13:7 states:

Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

There is honor in truth - so it is necessary to tell the truth about "the one".

This would mean not lauding him while pretending not to see the glaring flaws in his basic character and the lies and deceit that result from those character flaws.

First of all, you are going to have to define the word "King"...

Is Peter talking about the actual office of "King"?

Or is this the word Peter used to describe Government's authority as whole?

Since America has no king, you are going to have to first bridge the gap, and somehow make Obama = King.

After you do this, then you can apply this scripture to Obama.

But first explain how the office of President of the US = a King.

I can see some pitfalls to this... for instance... If we equate the office of President with King, then that gives the power of authority to the President, and takes the power away from the people.

When you take the authority away from the people, then you also strip them of responsibility to exercise that authority with wisdom and righteousness.

As a listener to a sermon that would equate the office of President to King, I would sharply disagree, and may even walk out...

In our Representative Republic, "Sovereignty" (== "kingship") rests with the people.

Not sure I agree that king relates only to king, but will chew on that one for awhile, but then what do you do with "honor all men" - there still needs to be ways of honoring the man

Thanks for all the responses, we are working!

If you hold that view then we must honour the 'king' since it elected President Obama. Honour the decision of the kingship.

"What is truth," P. Pilate, circ. 0036?

Question asked and answered by Christ.

John 14:6 "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

Obama's actions and words do not pass this test, because Christ would not condone his subterfuge, word smithing, outright lies, and murder of babies. He may not have aborted one by his hand, but he has aided, abetted and supported these acts. How can a Christian pay honor to a murderer of unborn babies? IMO a Christian should not, indeed must not, honor such a person.

Okay - who was Peter speaking of when he wrote 'Honour the king?'

Another thought, can this verse refer to the church instead of secular/religious? fear God, honor the king -- as in Christ?

"How can a Christian pay honor to a murderer of unborn babies? IMO a Christian should not, indeed must not, honor such a person."

How do you limit "all" men when Peter did not limit it?

Christ before Peter. The real question is what did he mean by "honour"? Did he mean we are not to question the "king"? Did he mean we are not to declare the "king wears no clothes" when we all know he doesn't? Are we to endorse a lie by not opposing it? Are we to imply truth by not revealing a lie?

Who was king when Peter wrote these words?

All it takes to define honour is a good dictionary.

    "Thayer Definition:
    1) to estimate, fix the value
1a) for the value of something belonging to one’s self
    2) to honour, to have in honour, to revere, venerate"

The term is used of Christ honoring the Father and us honoring Christ and the Father.

Seems a little more than pointing out the other's foibles.

Again, is there no way to honor the man in spite of what he is?

I don't think we biblicaly have a choice but to find that way. Does anybody want to tell us who the king was when Peter wrote 'honour the king?'

Perhaps to Daniel and the the 'three Hebrew children' to see how they responded to the king.

I hate to throw in another perspective.. but here goes...

The Bible says to honor our father and mother...

Where is the exception? Should the 8 yr old child honor their father if he is raping her, and he tells her not to say anything?
Should a 12 yr old deliver pot to one of their father's friends because the father told them too...

Should a 16 yr old go buy her mother a 6 pack of Bud if her mother sent her to a store to get some.. with a fake ID?

What if a mother sets up a date for money for her beautiful 16 yr old daughter.. (You know what I mean)... should the daughter honor her mother and go along with it?

    Are there exceptions to "honor"?

The immorality that this country has fallen into is atrocious...
And the Liberals are leading the charge.. should we honor them as they lead this country to Hell?

All because they won an election...

BTW... I heard today on NPR that Conservatives out number Liberals now in EVERY state.

So who has the power in this country.. .the Liberals.. or conservatives that are now waking up like a sleeping Giant?

As part of the kingship (I am one little cog in this country).. I will honor those who respect God... But for the ones that want to advance abortion availability, and special homosexual rights, I do not honor.. and that includes the President.
    Respect the office.. yes
honor the man in the office.. no... not until he turns to God to find the wisdom to lead us.

He is not King Obama.. He is President Obama.. He Presides over the affairs of the Republic..
IOWS.. He is supposed to be subject to US.. not Us subject to him...

When will President Obama honor the average working man? In this country, the multitude is the king.

I will pray for him.. I pray that he will ask God for wisdom.. then listen to God. I will also pray that he learns how to honor the King.. both the king of the US.. (the people).. and the KIng of Kings.

The King in the U.S. is not a man. It is the Constitution.

It would be an honor to the King to arrest Obama and throw him in prison for treason and tyranny.
