In the sermon yesterday our pastor said, "If you are brave enough ask your family, 'what am I like to live with?'"

No, I have not been brave enough to ask. Partly because of what I may hear and partly they may ask me what they are like to live with.

I live alone so there is no one to ask. This is the kind of question that would make single people (unmarried, widows, widowers, divorced people alone) feel left out. If a whole sermon was based on this, it might really depress some people.

Don't you have family Marcia? A father or mother, brother or sister, Aunt or uncle? I'm sorry if you don't. And I get your point but I think any sermon can depress just about anyone. God does call some people to be single but Paul says to be content in this not to be envious of anothers lot in life. I married late so I understand how some single people feel but I always told myself to get over it because families and spouces needed attention as well.

Parents and most of family I've known are dead - in fact, all blood relatives I've known except my sister and son are dead.

My sister lives overseas (she's a missionary) and my son lives nearby, but not with me.

One of the things I found as a new believer and single parent was the church is very family oriented and a lot of people are left out. Couples usually invited couples over for things (not singles) and families with children do things with other families. I realize this is all natural, but I do think people in the church should be sensitive to those who do not fit these categories.

I am not envious. I merely made a factual observation that is common among many like me in the church.

I need to add - and this is a sad commentary on the church - that the New Age community is often closer with each other than people in the church. I hear this a lot from new believers coming out of the New Age.

I am single. I have never been married.

I can honestly say that I have never been knowledgably "not invited" because of my "singlehood."

A lot of people I know feel some of what Marcia is saying, but I can't honestly say that I feel that way. Now, currently I have been visiting and helping with a "new to me" church, and at best it has been difficult "breaking into the circles." I would "blame" that on several things..... one, that I have a tendency to be shy, and I have not known anyone in this church....but they have still been gracious...two, I can only go every other week because of my work schedule (that is more of the problem, but it is an excuse) ....... three....pain from a hurtful situation in a previous church.

But from me being single? Heck no. I am more happy being single that many are being married, and life is a joy that way. People don't discount me for being single. They are just jealous.

The church is supposed to take care of orphans and widows. And has a history of doing so.

Now, having said that, "What am I like to live with?"

It is probably good that I am single. Bwahahahahaha.

I was single into my mid thirties and never had a problem being invited out to dinners and such. I had no plans to marry, but I was too busy with church work and perhaps it is different for a pastor.

I did have a few people who tried to link me up with single ladies. but I never dated ladies in my own church. I once took a sixteen year old girl to a performance of Messiah, but I invited her through her parents.

I was also engrossed in post-grad studies and they were more important than women. Guess I was too busy for the "love" thingy.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I know to you my political posts sound crazy, but I am not that crazy. I would not show my wife this thread if my life depended on it. She is quite a woman to put up with me for 32 years. Some days I think that sentencing a criminal to spend a week with me would be worse than any 10 year sentence they could dish out.

If you're anything at home like you are here, I don't blame you for not wanting to know what they think of you.

I hear that I'm a peach to live with. Sometimes I'm a real peach.

That's a good thing, right? RIGHT?

You might be surprised. I live with people intelligent enough to enjoy discussions and do not resort to one-liners and insults simply because they might disagree with me.

Have you asked your loved one what you are like to live with?

And do you insult them the way you insult us?

Funny you should ask. Yes, as a part of something we did at church, I have.

The only negative response is that my wife hates the way I put duct tape over the holes in my old shoes rather than throwing them out. She also thinks the way I turn my shirts inside out so they don't get dirty when I'm working is dumb.

Other than that, to know me is to love me.
