    I hear that a lot.

I will grant that at the onset, especially with a heavier set frame, that one might feel or actually even look more bulky, but I believe in the long run there is no better or faster way to sculpt and maintain the female figure than with the right kind of resistance weight training routines.

    What do you think?

If you feel a bit more bulky at first you should be patient, because:

It is muscle that burns fat, thereby healthy and correct proportions of muscle will not only allow one to have optimal fat burning abilities but also allows for added benefits of sculpting the body and is longer lasting because muscle tissue, once gained, is much easier to maintain and is slow to recede.

Muscle is a very active tissue and is always working and burning calories, even if you’re not doing anything, and even while you’re sleeping.

While actually doing the weight training exercise one burns fat because it uses up a huge amount of energy/calories and depending on what kind of exercises you choose will determine how many calories are burned; the harder the exercise the more calories burned. A full body workout will cover a much broader area than say riding a bike, walking/running etc. and every muscle you work on will be burning energy.

This brings us to after doing the actual exercises the muscles need to repair, that is why your muscles get sore the day after you train them. During this stage you body is using up even more energy/calories to do the repair.

Next, your muscles will get stronger and grow so your body will require yet more energy to maintain them. *(Here is the part that many women worry about getting bulkier.)

*First, by formulating the right routines you have a lot of control over how, where and what type of muscles you are putting on. (Sculpting) For instance, doing heavier weight, low repetitions, and restricted extension tends to put on more bulk, but higher repetitions and full extensions will be leaner, more defined and form longer muscles. You’re not going to see a lot of the definition anywhere until the fat is burned off and remember that fat setting around muscles makes them look bulkier than they actually are, but the good thing is that in the long run those muscles are going to burn much more fat off and produce a slimming effect.

The objective is to work the muscles you are putting on so that they are constantly burning off high amounts of fat. For a woman with the fat burned off to look “bulky” because of being muscle bound it would take an incredible amount of training, supplements, and a huge amount of caloric intake just to keep that type of bulk on. There is a metabolic balance that you want to keep that begins with muscle first and foremost, and once a sufficient amount of muscle is on and being used (worked with high repetitions) on a regular basis one might be surprised how much you need to eat just to keep weight on. Basically, you are replacing fat with calorie burning muscle which then has a constant slimming effect because improving your metabolic rate and the muscle is much leaner and better looking than fat to boot.

I believe you are correct...that is a common misperception for women, that they will put muscle on as much and as fast as a man would. The presence of estrogen coupled with the lack of testosterone make this an impossibility.
