Deuteronomy 6:4-7 "4"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise."

Deuteronomy 11:18-21 ""You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 19You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 20 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, 21 that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth. "

Homeschoolers feel that we can best teach God's Word by having our children with us from waking to sleeping. If we send our children out for 7+ hours, it's much more difficult to have that kind of influence on them.

The Deuteronomy 6 passage is the homeschooler's theme verse.

Thou shalt home school thy children... I'm looking for it. It's got to be in there somewhere.... We home school our three children. They are now all adults, attended college, serve in the milkitary, have families of their own and turned out to be rather socially adept in spite of what we were told may happen. Our youngest blossomed at home and started college 4 days before her 16th birthday.

A few things that formed our rationale for home schooling.

A friend of ours said that home schooling is not something you do. It is a choice in how you will live. We found that to be true for us. Vacations became "lab" for many things. We visited battlefields, National Parks and museums and hundreds of places that became teaching moments. Our middle child had difficulty with geometry. He and I built a pair of closets - framing, drywall, etc - using the abstract in a very real setting.

I believe, most importantly, that the home is the primary place of learning regardless if you home school or not. I view the following verses as a commandment for parents to take primary responsibility for the Godly instruction of their children: to teach His statutes and commandments. We were convinced that the development of Christian character is essential to the overall educational experience.

    Deuteronomy 6:1-9 NAS77
1 "Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the judgments which the LORD your God has commanded me to teach you, that you might do them in the land where you are going over to possess it,
2 so that you and your son and your grandson might fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged.
3 "O Israel, you should listen and be careful to do it, that it may be well with you and that you may multiply greatly, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.
4 "Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!
5 "And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
    6 "And these words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart;
7 and you shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.
8 "And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead.
9 "And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
    Psalms 78:1-7 NAS77
1 A Maskil of Asaph. Listen, O my people, to my instruction; Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old,
3 Which we have heard and known, And our fathers have told us.
4 We will not conceal them from their children, But tell to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, And His strength and His wondrous works that He has done.
5 For He established a testimony in Jacob, And appointed a law in Israel, Which He commanded our fathers, That they should teach them to their children,
6 That the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born, That they may arise and tell them to their children,
7 That they should put their confidence in God, And not forget the works of God, But keep His commandments,
    Joel 1:3 NAS77
3 Tell your sons about it, And let your sons tell their sons, And their sons the next generation.
