Economic crises can be used to usher socialism into the U.S., argued President Obama's newly confirmed regulatory czar, Cass Sunstein.

In his 2004 book "The Second Bill of Rights," Sunstein used the precedent of the Great Depression to point out that historic economic crises "provided the most promising conditions for the emergence of socialism in the U.S."

Crises are always used to increase the size and reach of government. We saw the Bush administration do that after the attacks on 9/11/2001 and passage of the Patriot Act and the adding of the Homeland Security department.

It may be constitutional but it is unnecessary. We already have a Department of Defense and a FBI and a CIA.

Who refused to communicate with each other. that Dept. ties them all in. Anyways what is going on now is unconstitutional as well as immoral.

So the answer is to add tens of thousands of more bureaucrats and spend tens of billions of more dollars printed out of thin air?

As long as conservatives support expanding the size of government then their calls for reducing the size of government will continue to ring hollow.

So who said that. Sorry the HS cannot be lumped in with all the other expansion. I know you libbies want to tie that Dept. into the war but it has nothing to do with it.

This statement is true and has nothing to do with HS

Sure it can. There is no way to prove that it is necessary to defend this nation. This is why conservatives prove that they are not reliable allies for us libertarians when it comes to downsizing government.

Actually the Homeland Security Department just combined various agencies into a group that could communicate with each other. The Posse Comitatus act forbids the use of the military for law enforcement in the US. The CIA is likewise restricted by law to overseas activity.

With the addition of thousands more bureaucrats and billions of more dollars.

It is obvious that some conservatives only oppose increasing the size and scope of government for departments they dislike and that they don't have a problem with doing so for departments that they like.

Some conservatives are just as much for big government as are some liberals.

Once again your premise is incorrect. Working on a perfect score today. It is poor logic and just plain incorrect that supporting defense programs are supporting "big" government. When you figure out who you are maybe your premises will begin to work.

We did not need to add thousands more bureaucrats and spend billions of more dollars in order for a few agencies to communicate better. A few well secured iPhones would have been a lot less expensive.

Until some conservatives stop believing that all money spent on national security and expanding the size of the government in that area is sacrosanct they will never have credibility in the downsizing of government debate.

You have set up a strawman. It is false that supporting the defense of this country and adjusting to bigger threats that we have never had before discredits the small government debate. You do not know what it would take to get the job done. Truthfully you have no idea. Supporting one government agency does not mean you support "Big' government. It never reaches the definition of "Big""

Just look at how many hundreds of billions of dollars are spent on the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, and national security each and every year in the country. It is certainly big government.

I have enjoyed the discussion. I think you are quite sincere in your beliefs and I respect that. :)

Here again you use vague descriptions to misrepresent. If every other thing that is actually unconstitutional was brought to an end it would not be big government. And the majority of those funds were spent on Iraq and Afghanistan. Completely separate from big government. The amount of money spent does not determine big government all by itself.

Ken, you are confusing the "Cap and Trade" Bill with the "Create Inflation" Bill.

Cap and Trade is a tax on "thin air".

Our administration is still using real paper and ink to print Federal Reserve Notes (very pretty BTW). There is talk about only printing them on one side to conserve ink. Also to discontinue printing one dollar bills as they can't buy much anyway.
