How important is it to you for a pastor to wear a tie when he preaches

Not important at all. However, I like the tie better than the contrived grunge look some young guns think they have to effect in order to be hip.

Sorry, I made a couple very minor typos in the poll - :tonofbricks:but nothing that would change the meaning of the poll

It doesn't really matter to me. In our new church plant, it will be "suits optional" and the campus pastor (my husband) will not be wearing one. He's actually at church right now not wearing a suit because he's on crutches and he found the last time he was on crutches, a suit was TERRIBLE to work with. So he's in nice slacks and a polo shirt. That will be his uniform for the new church too.

I have worn a tie twice in the past 5 years. I know, compromiser. Even worn a suit a couple times.

I wear a shirt fitting for the season; may be button down, oxford, hawaiian, polo. I don't wear a t-shirt and shorts, but many Sundays I am the only man who doesn't!

For "formal" settings (weddings, funerals) I wear a banded collar.

I wear a tie for our early traditional service, but never at other times except for marrying and burying.

I honestly don't care if he wars one or not.We ask our staff to be professional in their dress On Sundays, but that means different things to different people.

We can Ask them to stay away from certain things (graphic tees) but usually let then decide. Our context is not traditional.

It appears that Mrs. Dr. Bob is okay with what you have on. But I hate to tell you this. Whatever you wear, Mrs. Dr. Bob will always look better than you.

IMHO, you look too much like a RCC "priest". That's just me.

Ties are completely optional. I would prefer our pastor not wear one, actually. It is simply an adornment that gets in the way as far as I am concerned.

If he was doing some good preaching I wouldn't care if he wore camel's hair, but I might not make the banquet if the menu was grasshoppers and honey.

I think more traditional Baptist churches with older pastors and congregations expect the pastor to wear a tie, simply because it has been the "norm" for most of their lives. To me, wearing a suit and tie is showing respect for God. You dress your best, because He gave His Best. I've been to churches that will not allow shorts in the sanctuary.I also think drinking and eating during worship service is wrong. But, what do I know. We go with what seems most comfortable to us. What we're used to. Nothing in Scripture either way.

I got used to wearing a clergy collar in the military. Good job some of you weren't around in the early days when Baptist pastors wore tails and striped trousers for morning worship services, and striped trousers, black jacket and waistcoat and starched collar and tie for other services. Some also wore a Geneva gown.

Must confess, I still wear a complete suit for church services.

    Cheers,

    Jim

My best is NOT a suit and tie. It is a tux. Guess I don't have respect for God.
