What should one pay for a Bible?

    Hello all my friends,

I was in a Bible Store a few days ago. When I went to purchase my Bible the cashier said my total was $180 plus dollars. It was a mistake. However, I did laugh and said imagine a Bible costing that much? He said there are some, ones that have expensive leathers and the such.

After thinking more about the encounter I realize how much money I spent on other things I have in my life. Why not pay so much for a Bible? After all, it is the Holy Bible and something I use daily. Nevertheless, I still have difficulty with the idea.

I guess it is a matter of personal choice. Though, I wonder if there are any thoughts on this issue either way?

Thank you for reading my post.

You should pay how ever much you want to.
    That was easy wasn't it?

Actually, bibles can go up into the thousands of dollars, believe it or not, and I think that is ridiculous. My favorite bible is a plain text, giant print KJV, genuine leather, by Cornerstone Publishers. It is very well made and the print is easy on my eyes. The best part is it was only 34.95 at my local family owned Christian store.

... There are wide range of reasons for purchasing any said Bible. A $180.00 calf skin Bible for pastor appreciation day would seem appropriate to me but for me to purchase such a thing for myself is vain, I just need my $20.00 NASB and I can do all I need.

I purchased a Bible app for my iPhone. It was $1.99. Does that count?

Seriously, the companies that make Bibles should be compensated for their labor. If you're getting a bible that's finely crafted with things such as high quality leather and gold inlay or tooling, you bet the craftsmen who created it should be paid for their labor.

When my wife and I married, I bought her a leatherbound bible with her new married name engraved on it as a wedding present, paying about $70 for it. On what principle should that be for free?

My primary Bible is really pretty, wonderful to handle and is well made - and I just paid $20. However, DH was given an R.L. Allen ESV Bible when he was ordained and that thing is amazing!! The craftsmanship is wonderful and I love that leather. If I can pay over $1000 for a saddle (and the one I'm saving up for is $3500), why can't I pay $180 for a Bible?? :)

Who said anything about it being free, JohnV? I think you're reading into something that wasn't really said.

As for the cost of a bible... as other posters have already stated, it's a matter of personal taste. I enjoy my KJV study bible which set me back around $60. I could have gotten a plain-text bible for $5 and know for a fact that there are plenty of bibles available for $5 each. I don't think it was vain of me to spend the extra $... it was an investment in my understanding of the scriptures. I could have also gotten a different study bible for around $30, but the one I picked had a nice cover and looked to be more sturdy. Is it vain to buy things that last?

I buy a new Bible each December (Different translation...Christmas gift to myself :)), and try not to go over $60. I don't need genuine leather, but I also don't like the hard bound either.

I wouldn't care to add up what I have spent on Bibles through the years.

Then again, it would be less than the cable cost for the same length of time, so I can't really complain.

I have a small electronic Bible. It's a KJV and was made by Franklyn. It's about 3X5 and maybe 3/8's of an inch thick. The display screen displays verses in large type one verse at a time. It has a search on it like the one on my computer. The main reason I like it so much is that instead of thumbing through pages looking for a verse the Pastor is preaching on. All I have to do is punch in the verse location and it pops up instantly.
It cost about $50.00. I think it was well worth it because If I can't rememeber where a verse is, it can find it by word search. The Christian book store at the mall had them in several versions

I have one of those too. My husband gave it to me for Christmas several years ago. I use mine as a concordance. Just type in a word and it will find all the verses for you. It's a really cool little device.

    Johnv,
... I have purchased similar Bible and fine calf skin covers for my wife. I just will not purchase such for myself. I expect my money to be a benefit to others and in that manor to satisfy my needs to serve. I dn't eve tithe because I need to, I tithe because I love the LORD that forgave my sins.

I know you weren't addressing me but I agree. I was very lucky the day I was looking for my present copy and found it on clearance sale. Mine should have cost about sixty dollars also.

It depends completely on the print quality, that is materials used. Compare a $100 Bible to a $10 Bible and you easily see where the cost comes from.

Genuine leather or plastic glued to cardboard.............
