Fighting germs in church

    Hi all,

    I've already been through the H1N1 this year, but I'm concerned about my wife and little girl. Last time I took communion, I noticed alot of sick looking people touching the communion tray as it was passed down the isles. Do we need to rethink about the ways that we dispense the communion elements to make the process more sanitary? Would more access to hand sanitizer in church be a good idea? Any thoughts? Thanks,

    Its true that the Holy Spirit will protect us (in an eternal sense), but God also doesn't want us to play on train tracks. I think that God also wants us to use our brains to apply the science that He has enabled us to discover.

    Being of the walking wounded (fifth year of inoperable lung cancer) and prone to infection by the treatments, I no longer attend services. I am fortunate in that my next door neighbor is a wonderful pastor and broadcasts his services on the internet. I clean up and shave and comb my hair each Sunday morning and sit in front of my computer as the service comes online. Wonderful to have the message if not the intimate fellowship of the congregation.

    While visiting colleges with my daughter I noticed some things that are being done to reduce risk.

    In each building they have a fast-drying liquid hand sanitizer station.
    Just hit a button and an alcohol-based solution sprays your hands.

    Pastors should encourage people to stay at home if they are sick, particularly children.

    The Spirit does not protect against foolishness!

    One thing that might help is to be conscious not to touch your face with your hands after shaking hands with others or taking communion. Then, as soon as possible, go wash them.

    I would pass the communion tray with just one hand and take the bread or cup with the other. Don't cross-contaminate your hands and once you've partaken, use your own hand sanitizer to disinfect your hands.

    You could use alcoholic drink, and that would keep the germs down. Seriously.

    Or just not take the juice. Or have those plastic things where the bread/juice come together.

    You know that is true, I had not thought of that.

    That would never happen in a lot of churches though.
    Our church uses welches but would not be opposed to those who use the real thing.

    We have not done anything major to protect against germs but there have been reminders during the announcements to be careful.

    Also, while God certainly can and does protect us in many situations, there is never an excuse to be careless.

    When I was at FBC Crosby TX. they had started using a cup that was sealed and then had a wafer on top that was sealed also, you had to open it yourself. not sure were they got them.
