Are you for it or against it? Do you think our founding fathers would have been for career politicians?

In my opinion, the Founding Fathers would not have used the number of terms in office as a criteria. They might have objected to politicians that do not follow the Constitution, politicians who are thieves, politicians who do not know how to govern, politicians that do not know how to balance a budget, politicians who do not serve the American people, politicians who use tax dollars to benefit corporations and lobbyists.

The Founding Fathers also expected their leaders to have some similance of honesty and integrity. My guess is they also expected their leaders to respect life and liberty. They may have even expected that they acknowledge a Creator in some way.

Personally, I think Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Franklin, Hancock, and all the rest would either take everyone of them to the nearest tree and hang them or die all over again of a heart attack.

Ninty nine percent (and that is generous) of the politicians today, both Republican and Democrat, are self indulgent, power hungry, slobs. They trample the Consititution and steal from the American people daily. They are inept at governing, and have no respect for either God or their fellow man. They in fact are the essence of evil, and their two organizations, the Republicans and Democrats, are a stench to the Lord.

This nation was founded on high ideals and principles, and we the people do not have to stand for time after time having to choose between two godless candidates. We are better than that. I am so sick of seeing adulterous leaders coming before the microphone with their quiet wife by their side say we will get through this together, I could scream. Do you hear me Mr Craig, Senator Vitter, Senator Ensign, Represenative Foley, and Governor Sanford? (and President Clinton) Everyone of them ought to be in prison for theft and treason, and on a chain gang.

In case my post was vague on my thoughts, let me know and I will rewrite it.

Career politicians main job the way I see it is to get reelected. They care for their great job, more than anything else.

The Founding Fathers of the constitution, Franklin, Jefferson and the rest of them designed a republic that would be served by volunteer citizens that would donate time as congressman and senators and presidents, and then go back to their day jobs as farmers, businessman or local leaders.

Career politicians jobs back home is like much of our citrus land here in Florida, it pays more to build houses and Wal Marts on that land than to grow citrus and with all the perks the career politicians makes more in D.C. than at home.

I like the experience of a career politician, but I think that each district needs a fresh voice. Fresh ideas. Perspective of folks just like him/her. I think that career politicians tend to move more toward an agenda than as the voice of their own people. I'd prefer that the voice of the little man be heard once again---not just the voice of the rich and powerful.

For the most part I don't know if the voice of the little man was ever heard, much. He has been working to hard and trying to make it to the next day. Young folks, educators and folks who make a lot of noise along with the folks with wealth and the few with vision seem to push for what they want.

Look at the Revolutionary war here and look and see the leaders, most were the haves. However many of them came out of the war with a lot less, some broke, they put their money were their mouth was. Career politicians (most of them) put our money where their mouth is, big differences.

Seems that it is time for the American public to give them all a pink slip in the next election.

I'm not a fan of career politicians, despite the fact that many of the founding fathers ended up being career politicians. We often abhor the concept, but end up voting for people based on their political history anyway. And when someone doesn't have enough political history, we express concern that they're inexperienced.

Folk who make their entire career around an elected position are just fine with me. They must be doing something right to keep getting elected for term after term. The only exception that I could possibly point to is Edward Kennedy, who I'm sure rode on the coat tails of his brothers for quite some time, but he must have had something on the ball to keep winning elections too.

I'm an Iowan and I support a career politician in Chuck Grassley. I think there are some things he could do better, but on the whole, I think he does an excellent job. I think he's nearly 73 now and will soon not be able to continue in his role. The main problem with that, besides our missing a hard-working man, is that this is Iowa... we'll vote some nut-job in from the liberal party like Tom Harkin who had the audacity to make a run for the WH some time back.

    God bless Chuck Grassley. :)

Well, if someone is a career politician, it's our own fault for re-electing them over and over again.

Here in Connecticut as most states there is a big battle going on about the budget. The Dems are in control and have been for many years. Their solution is of course to raise taxes on nearly everything. Jodi Rell, our Republican governor and the Republicans are trying to cut spending, but they are in the minority.

Many of my co-workers constantly complain about their taxes going up. And I always tell them they will they will continue to go up if they keep electing these big-spending Democrats. I get a blank stare as if they don't understand what I'm saying every time.

That said, it is not just the Democrats that spend like there's no tomorrow, many Republicans are also guilty of that. But we need to vote out these big spenders, whoever they are and elect responsible leaders.

I believe career politicians loose touch with the very people they are supposed to represent. And, as stated earlier, being reelected becomes their goal, not looking out for what is best for the country or for those they represent.

We need term limits on Congress but it can't happen without a constitutional amendment.

Before giving that consideration, we need to consider why term limits were nor adopted by the Framers of the Constitution, despite the fact that leaders such as Thomas Jefferson, on behalf of Virginina regarding the Continental Congress, expressed consideration to limit terms "to prevent every danger which might arise to American freedom by continuing too long in office". Even with those concerns aired, the Framers never adopted term limits in the Constitution, at a time when it would have been easy to do.
