IV Antibiotic drip

    Have you ever had to be on an IV drip with antibiotics? Why?

    When I was a teen, I developed a severe infection in my leg from an untreated cut. I was hospitalized and put on an antiboitic IV. I think I was only in for 24 hours, iirc.

    Wow. Was it quick to heal? How long had the cut been festering?

    I had received the cut two days earlier, on the back of my leg, while playing in a local stream. It was obvious there was a problem when it hurt to the touch, and I wouldn't stand normally. Pretty scary, I remember.

    I think I was feeling better after just a few hours on the IV. By the time I was released, there was no sign of infection.

    I have had IV antibiotics only when I had my c-sections but hubby was admitted 4 weeks ago when he had a compound dislocation of his toe (which means that the bone was dislocated and popped right through the skin by a LOT). The doctor said 3 days but infectious disease said that he could go home after 24 hours. He did fine, thank heavens. :)

    I administer IV antibiotics daily in my work as a registered nurse. IV Abs are often used in order to effect treatment more quickly, rather than by stomach where they need to be absorbed through the lining etc. A lot of folk find oral antibiotics make them nauseous as well.

    There is a trend to move away from antibiotics as a prophalaxis after surgery but again this depends on the type of surgery and the surgeon.

    For sepsis, ( a potentially life threatening ailment) IV ABS are started as quickly as practiable because there is in most cases a visible improvement in 24-48 hrs.:type:

    My father was on an antibiotic drip for sepsis. It didn't help him and he died of septicemia, but he was up in years and I guess his time to go home.
