Still every 2 weeks even though I retired from the AF earlier this year.

I can't stand long hair; besides the shorter the hair, the less gray.

 

I've been cutting my own hair for 40 years. A #2 clipper attachment is quicker than shaving.

 

I've cut my hair for years. However, I have let it grow for over a year now with only light trimming a few times, and it's just past my shoulders--or would be if it wasn't so curly.

 

Jon-Marc you don't have to tell me about curly hair. I have curly hair and it's the number one thing I would change about my appearance if I could. I've discovered that it's much better to have it cut extremely short (I've been wearing short hair since the mid-80's and a high and tight for over 15 years now.) My barber cut hair at the local now-closed military base for over 20 years and was a manager of one of the on-base shops for many years.

It's actually more difficult to cut hair very short and do a good job than to leave it longer, as differeces as short as 1 millimeter can be seen. Longer hair allows sloppier work to be hidden. There is also a huge difference between the skills and training of professionals who have "real" barber college licenses vs. all the haircutters (I won't call them barbers) who have beauty school/cosmetology licenses. This includes almost all of the women working in the unisex "hair places" like Great Clips. For example, true barbers get hundreds of hours in tapering/clipper work and it takes a certian skill to be able to taper evenly with clippers without leaving lines. Beauty school/cosmetologists get very little training in clipper work and tapering. That's why you don't often see men anymore with the sides and back tapered. The unisex beauty school haircutters can usually only do "blocked" necklines. Their training is more in coloring, tinting, highlighting, perms, etc. They're trained more towards giving haircuts that are softer and more rounded and are more flattering to the feminine face and form. I know my barber has had to fix up many a botched haircut given by a Great Clips or similar chain unisex place.

In my opinion, men who go to one of those unisex places are getting an experience more akin to getting their hair 'done' than getting an old fashioned haircut like their fathers or grandfathers.
