Imagine that your body is a glass. Now, imagine that an evil spirit is air, and imagine that the Holy Spirit is water. When you make a commitment to Christ, you glass gets filled with water. Once your cup is filled with water, there's no room in the glass for air.

As for whether people "can" be possessed today? I'm sure it's possible, but it's easier for evil to spread in the natural world than the spiritual world. A possessed person is easily recognizeable as being possessed, and therefore easier to combat by a believer (especially since they have no power over us). Evil in the physical world, however, is much more difficult to recognize, and therefore more difficult to combat.

Yes, people can and have been possessed today. I've been witness to it.

No, a Christian cannot be possessed but they can be demonically influenced. There is a difference.

Thank you for your input on this matter. Did the person possessed you were witness to come to the point were they were free from their possession?

Very well said. I have encountered several who were possessed. Only the power of Christ can free a person from their possession.

Some say that possession was only for the 1st century. I do not know if that is true. What do y'all think?

There's nothin in scripture to suggest demon possession was limited in time and scope. Therefore, it's just as possible to occur today as any other time in human history, imho.

I have read many accounts of missionaries who have witnessed possession. It seems to be a common occurrence in countries that practice witchcraft and religions like Voodoo.

    It's sister.

But we had a girl living with us for a few months who we tried to counsel but she was very self-destructive and was very against God, even though she claimed to believe in Jesus. In living with her, we saw that this was something more than just a troubled girl but that there was something more going on. She was a cutter (she cut her flesh regularly) and would just do some weird things that we began to question what was going on. She left our home after she went crazy one night and would NOT go to church with us (and we had stated in the beginning that if she lived with us, she was a member of the family and she would go to church with us every Sunday). She moved to her dad's house and a couple of years came back to us. We insisted that she speak with our senior pastor and as she did, it became apparent that there definitely was something more going on with her. My pastor suggested that we see if there was a demon involved and she was receptive to it so we did. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to stay because I had my young children with me and we had decided it would be best if they were not present but my husband explained some of what went on to me.

He said that they started out in prayer asking the Spirit to guide them and protect them from what went on and then they addressed the girl. They spoke to her but asked if there were any demons present with her and at first there was nothing (Pastor had told her to not speak) but soon there was a voice that was NOT her coming from her. Pastor spoke to the demon and asked him who he was - I don't remember what the response was. But then pastor told the demon to leave "In the name of Jesus". The girl began having a seizure and fell on the floor screaming and then soon was quiet. All of the others who were in the room (3 pastors and 2 women who were wives of the pastor) were praying over her and Pastor told the demon to leave the girl and that he had no claim over her. The girl slowly woke up and it was so obvious that something had happened to her. At this point, they got her back in the chair and gave her a glass of water then they led her to the Lord.

There was a massive change in this girl although she still had to struggle a bit with her past (abuse) and learn who she was in Jesus Christ. There is no question as to what happened in that room because of the difference in her before and after.

Our pastor has spoken to us about this and he's done this numerous times but very often, there is no demon present - just a very troubled individual. But he's also met numerous demons through all his years of ministry and has found demon possession to be real.

One thing he said is for everyone else in the room to NOT close their eyes when they pray but look to the person. It's because most of the time they physically get violent and you want to see the swing coming and not be hit while not looking.

Hope this helps a bit. :)
