Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Wednesday lashed out at President Obama for claiming the Bush administration rebuffed commanders' repeated requests for more troops in Afghanistan.

In a rare break in his public silence since leaving the Pentagon, Rumsfeld rejected the claim as a "bald misstatement" and "disservice" that cannot go unanswered.

"Such a bald misstatement, at least as it pertains to the period I served as secretary of defense, deserves a response," Rumsfeld said in a written statement. "I am not aware of a single request of that nature between 2001 and 2006."

Mullen disputes Rumsfeld on Afghan troop request

Mullen disputes Rumsfeld on Afghan troop request
    By: Jen DiMascio
    December 2, 2009 06:16 PM EST

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff pushed back in a fact-checking dispute with former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, asserting that the Bush administration objected rejected a Pentagon request for more troops for Afghanistan last year.

Adm. Michael Mullen told a House committee Wednesday that Gen. David McKiernan, who led U.S. troops in Afghanistan between 2008 and this year, had asked for 20,000 troops for the effort but was rebuffed.

“We didn’t have them because they were pushed to Iraq,” the four-star admiral said during a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing in response to a question from Indiana Republican Rep. Mike Pence. “That was the priority of the president.”

    ...

But that’s consistent with what the Obama told the nation at West Point Tuesday night – and what White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters today – that the speech was referring to the Pentagon’s choices after Rumsfeld left office.

Here’s Obama’s assertion: “When I took office, we had just over 32,000 Americans serving in Afghanistan, compared to 160,000 in Iraq at the peak of the war,” said Obama, who took office this January. “Commanders in Afghanistan repeatedly asked for support to deal with the reemergence of the Taliban, but these reinforcements did not arrive.”
Neither Mullen’s response, nor the president’s statement seem to align with what got under the skin of the fiery former defense secretary who issued this statement Wednesday....

Actually Mullen did not dispute Rumsfield. This is simply an example of media twisting the truth. Rumsfield was talking about 2001-2006. The request Mullen mentioned did not come until 2008. Mullen said the requested troops went to Iraq. I thought that troops were being withdrawn from Iraq last year, not more being sent in. Also since the request apparently did not come until after the election it is only natural that Bush would deter to his successor to conduct the war of necessity.

Frankly I don't know why Rumsfield had to use the politically correct word for lie!

From the source referenced in the OP!

"In his speech, Obama gave a detailed history of the Afghanistan war starting with the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. He argued that the Iraq war drew needed resources away from Afghanistan, allowing the situation to deteriorate since 2003.

"Throughout this period, our troop levels in Afghanistan remained a fraction of what they were in Iraq," Obama said. "Commanders in Afghanistan repeatedly asked for support to deal with the reemergence of the Taliban, but these reinforcements did not arrive."

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs explained Wednesday that Obama was referring to requests that came in during 2008, and suggested Rumsfeld was on thin ice with his criticism."

So you see that Gibbs is a liar as well as Obama. Hopefully Mullen is not! Rumsfield was correct. Obama lied as usual.

Outside of a very few politicians, such as Congressman Ron Paul and his son, Rand Paul, politicians are congenital liars.

When it comes to most members of Congress, and politicians in general, Will Rogers hit the nail squarely on the head:

"Suppose you were an idiot, and suppose you were a member of Congress; but I repeat myself."

Even a casual reading tells us that both men are in agreement.

Rumsfeld told the truth. Mullen confirmed it.

The only one whose goal apparently was to mislead the public was Obama, when he was not specific about the dates. I believe that was intentional . He wanted his listeners to believe, when he said "repeatedly", that this had been going on all during the time we were in Afghanistan.

Another transparent effort to "blame Bush" and excuse his own indecisiveness.

Rumsfeld is simply attempting to salvage his legacy. He and the Bush admin. made a huge mistake going into Iraq and taking attention, troops, and material away from the real danger area. They thought Iraq would be a quick war and they would look like heros. Remember the "Mission Accomplished" scene. It appears they knew nothing about the culture of the Mid-East or the history of the region. Anyone with an elementary knowledge of both would never have done what they did.

Bush was merely finalizing the U.N. charter, which Clinton, Gore, Kerry, & other dems were demanding for over 9 years. You can repeat the same lie over & over, but the truth is, Iraq was a bi-partisan effort.

I take Crabby with a grain of salt.

He's like two hundred years old - or so it seems from his posts - and is probably used to saying outrageous things without being called on them in his real life.

We get the same sort of stuff from my father in-law who gets away with it because he is at an age where you just feel sorry for him - but it's really just a scam on his part.

He plays on it so as not to be held accountable for his asinine remarks.
