Have you all heard about the new legislation that could force the BCS to cease calling their game a "national championship"?

From what I read, it does not force them to change anything as far as the actual format goes. It does NOT force the BCS to change to a playoff, it simply does not allow them to falsely advertise their game as a championship.

I am not normally in favor of congress getting involved in sports but I think they are right here.

This is a matter of false advertising and interstate commerce.

As long as this is as far as they go, I think it could be good.

It is college football, it is a playoff and congress has no business getting involved.

    False advertising how ridiculous.

    It's not a playoff.

It IS a championship as there is a contractual agreement to award a national championship to the winner in one poll. There is no false advertising here. Now, if they were calling it a tournament champion, maybe they have a case.

I have not a clue how anyone reaches that conclusion but when two teams play against each other to determine the champion that is a play off.

One of the few things we agree on. You are correct on this!!!

I'm one of the few who isn't crazy about a play off system. I would rather see any coach who does not have 65% of his player graduate be fired. I've seen for year ex players who didn't make the NFL or the NBA loading and unloads trailers. Talk to them and you wonder how they ever got into school.

You live in Ar., go to Little Rock, or West Memphis or Memphis and you will see them. I've seen them here in Florida in Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando, Miami and in other places in south Florida as well as the panhandle. Do to the amount of players that come out of Florida, most SEC and ACC schools these players went to.

Look at the few players who made the NFL and can't read or not well and went to school and many had degrees.

Let me see...we've got colossal problems, and they want to run the BCS???

What a monumentally stupid thing for Congress to get involved in.

First, those guys could screw up an anvil with a rubber mallet. Before they're done, we'll have a quota system for g*y coaches, and they'll make everyone's record 6-6, so that things are "fair."

Second, why are they meddling in something that is of so little importance to our country?

Third, if the other problems are so massive, why are they wasting their time, and my money, on this?

Fourth, once they get their big power-hungry noses under the tent, do you really think they'll ever leave it alone?

Fifth, there will be crybabies every year. Heck, there are 64 teams in March Madness (and I will NOT count that stupid "play-in game")...and folks still whine about being left out. No way that won't happen in college football, all the time. And...with the remarkably awful track record Congress has at fixing anything...you'll end up with ten times the mess you have now.

Technically, a two team invitational I suppose is a playoff. But the system for selecting these two is not. The system is not a playoff. That's what you seemed to be saying. How anyone can say that our current system is a playoff is beyond me. Perhaps that's not what you're saying.

Tom, I can't say what he is saying, half the time or more I couldn't tell you what I was saying.

I know you are younger than I am and that is good and bad, good for you and bad for me that I'm not younger. When I played college ball, it was told us ever day, that each game we played was a play off. If you lost this week, it could make you a second level team. However in baseball we knew we had another chance and I'm sure the basketball ball boy did too. Football could be one and out, not the other sports.

I can think of quite a few times that a team lost early and by season end was the best team in the land, but didn't get to play for number one. FSU comes to mind on that, they did it a few times, I believe Mississippi did it one time when LSU won it all with Billy Cannon and I'm sure there are others. As long as folks take sports seriously, we are going to have folks not happy. Sports are not to be taken seriously are less you are playing and even then leave the game on the field. Take your family seriously not sports, sports are for fun. Not saying you are guilty(which I'm sure you aren't) but I've seen verbal fights and physical fights over sports. How sad.

I was taught from high school on that every game was a play off, I'll stick to it.

Wasn't there a paragraph in their about Major League Baseball not allowing them to call their final playoffs the "World Series" since at the most only two countries can be involved. Therefore it should be renamed the North America series and also MLB will be required to field at least one team in Mexico.

I was taught the same thing. Basketball, too. Not so much in baseball. Anyway, we're not talking "coach-speak" here. We're talking advertising. That's the premise.

Like it or not, while it's not a playoff in a comparative sense, since the winner is crowned a champion, it is a championship. Now, back when the alliance system was in place (some probably don't even remember that), you could make a case then. But the "Alliance" did crown an "Alliance Champion" (what a joke that was). I'll never forget the 1998 Orange Bowl, the so-called Bowl Alliance's championship game featuring Neb and Tenn. Neb blew out my boys. But Michigan did not play in the game because they had to go to the Rose Bowl. Neb's QB was pleading (after the 4 second Alliance trophy presentation) for voters to "make us" national champions because Osbourne was retiring. How pathetic. I think that moment crystalized the whole debacle that was CFB up to that point. Voters did give Neb AND Mich a share of the national title. Still is a bit of a debacle (we've still had split titles since then). But at least you know the winner of the BCS NC game will be given a national title.

It's still not a system that "settles it on the field." We still need a better system (see the other BCS thread).

Look, I'm an Auburn alum and huge Tigers fan so if anybody hates the BCS, it's me. I believe the "B" in BCS stands for something unrepeatable here.

But unless they can show that there is some sort of racketeering at work, Congress has no business being involved.
