Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is trailing President Barack Obama by only one percentage point in a potential 2012 matchup, according to a new Public Policy Polling survey out Thursday.

Huckabee runs stronger against Obama than any other Republican in the poll of 1,253 registered voters, getting 45 percent to Obama’s 46 percent.

......Former Govs. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and Sarah Palin of Alaska also register over 40 percent against Obama. Romney trails Obama 47 percent to 42 percent in a potential 2012 presidential matchup, while Palin is down 6 percentage points, 50-44 percent.

“It’s no surprise that as Barack Obama’s approval rating has fallen so have his leads over his potential 2012 opponents,” said Public Policy Polling President Dean Debnam. “His standing with the voters is definitely weaker now than it was a year ago.”

It is far, far too early to get excited about anyone in the 2012 election. So much can happen between now and then to make a person either the hero or the goat or somewhere inbetween. Articles at this point in time are written because someone has a deadline and nothing important to write about.

At this point, 3 years before the election, the only candidate I would personally be excited about would be the one I voted for in the primary in 2008 - Congressman Ron Paul.

I would hope Paul doesn't try running as a Republican, but I could vote for him or Huckabee. Others will surface soon enough..

I agree...Obama will be such a failure that the Dems will break tradition and run somone else besides him in 2012!

What the Republicans need is a conservative leader who can unify the conservative bases and turn the Socialist's lies upon themselves. You'd better start praying now. All the Republicans have in their favor presently is a discontented and disillusioned electorate. This is not enough to win the White House.

Most likely scenario in 2012 will be a unified Democrat party and a fragmented conservative bloc and multiple candidates. Obama will win in another landslide.

IF there is a 2012 election, that is.
