Some of those I've never heard of, and the only one with which I've had any experience is northern Independent Baptist churches and southern Baptist. I prefer the northern independent Baptist. It's impossible to vote honestly with no knowledge of the rest.

"Cooperative Baptist" churches Fundamental?!? They are the ones who still bash what goes on in the SBC 20 years after their movement started.

IFB churches are not. The ones I know (hundreds) left the fundamentals years ago.

Part of this depends on how you define "fundamentalist". Is it being used in the classic sense of the Five Fundamentals or in the modern context where it means more of a radical element of Christianity? Another thing we need to determine is the dividing line between "fundamentalist" and "evangelical."

yeah.. if you were here in New Zealand in town and started talking about fundamentalism.. it would normally mean hyper-charismatic. Same goes if you use the word 'born again christian'.. people just associate these terms in NZ with nut jobs or highly charismatic christians.

If I was to think of a definition myself.. it would be only the lines of -

*believing the bible is the inerrant, infallible Word of God
    * believing that Jesus is God
    * salvation by grace through faith- fullstop
    * believing the bible is the all sufficient rule of faith
    * believing the Holy Spirit, the Father and the Son are co-equal substances of God

I am not going to say 'believing in the holy catholic church'.. even though that is in alot of creeds.. because 'catholic' is a word not only not in the bible.. but the catholic religion is definitely not fundamentalist.

also.. how baptists are defined in the poll-- you have some inconsistencies-- for example--

American Baptist churches.. not many believe them to be fundamentalist.. but if you look at the American Baptist Association.. it is chock full of independent missionary baptist churches which are about as fundamentalist as you can get in terms of holding to the bible completely.

So.. American Baptist.. is probably referring to the American Baptist Conference ABC.. which has a very broad spectrum of baptist churches through it.

Then Southern Baptist.. not many referring to them as fundamentalist.. yet sometimes the only difference between southern baptists and independent baptist/independent missionary baptist is what they define as 'the church'.

to complicate things even more-- there will be many churches in these classifications calling themselves 'anabaptists'

Now anabaptists.. some claim the name - like Mennonites and the like.. and then independent baptists and independent missionary baptists will claim it aswell.

So the poll.. has some complicating factors.

Someone has said, "If you put ten Fundamentalists in a room, soon you will have 15 different types of Fundamentalism", or something along those lines.

Huh??? What do you mean here? What fundamentals are you talking about? You've lost me.

I've preached in or visited literally hundreds of IFB churches in America, Japan and other countries, and they all believed in all the fundamentals--that is if you mean the traditional list of the fundamental doctrines that fundamentalism was originally loyal to in the 1920s and 1930s. We have a pastors fellowship here on Hokkaido, including both Japanese pastors and American missionaries, and they all believe in the fundamentals.

Perhaps a better poll would be:

which type of baptist Churches still hold to the Fundamentals of the faith?

A fundamentalist was marooned on a deserted island.

When he was found after two years, he was asked why he had built three huts on the island.

He said that one was his house, and one was his church.

"But what about the third one, what is that", he was asked.

"Oh that - that's the church I used to go to."

This sounds like some fundamental churches I know of.

I was saved at a fundamental, independent Baptist church and stayed there for several years. It was a good church, but they tended to go off the deep end once in a while. Although there were a few churches we fellowshipped with, the problem was that, behind closed doors, these other churches just never were fundamental enough. Too often these churches separate over the silliest things.

I'm SBC, but we are definitely fundamental. No, our pastor isn't a yelling, pulpit-thumping, snot-flinging, front row spraying, run up and down the aisle, fire and brimstone preacher... but he seeks the heart of God and holds the the elements of the faith without all the man-made crap.

He probably did, but nowadays he might say something more like, "Can't we all just get along?"

Hello? When did I leave Fundamentalism. A lot of it may have left me, but I still are one.
