In another post, I indicated that the US has not occupied Germany or Japan (with the possibility of Berlin) since 1955.

Often, many on this board will say that the US is still occupying these two nations.

So what are you thoughts. Are we still occupying Germany and Japan?

Here is my original post from the other thread: (post # 63)

Yes, we are still in Germany and Japan - but not in a status of Occupation.
German occupation officially ended May 1955 and Japan occupation ended in 1952. Since the end of occupation, we are there at the governments request for security - especially in Germany where the threat of an invasion was a strong possibility.
After occupation officially ended, US military personnel were subject to Host nations laws as directed by SOFA.
Remember, we were also in France - why are no longer there? - We were kicked out.

One can call it whatever he/she wants. I want all of our troops in foreign countries brought home and whatever number of them are needed to be used to guard our borders and our shorelines from illegal aliens.

Technically SLC Baptist is correct. We rent mercenaries to foreign despots. The US taxpayers pay the rent.

That would be against the law.

We're not "occupying" any nation in which we've fought wars. We've always returned control to the host nation as soon as possible. We're even doing that in our current wars. In some cases, we've worked out long term status of forces agreements and have joined some common defense alliances through which we've kept some strategic military bases in foreign countries. But those don't constitute "occupation" and we certainly don't control the local affairs of the host nations. The occupation forces we've had in the past did a great job of restoring, maintaining, and transitioning civil order following the chaos of war. The US Constabulary that operated in Germany following World War II is a great example. It baffles me why some people are so negative about America's outstanding record. They seem to seek out and magnify the smallest short comings and ignore the overwhelming historical record.
