I'm in the choir at my church and we wear robes. I wanted to see if others on here do that.

We don't have a choir anymore (haven't in probably 20 years) so we don't have robes. We have some in our prop room that are left over but when we need them for dramas, we have to borrow from a sister church. LOL

One church I was a part of worked hard to get choir robes that were the colors of the the local school. (Purple robes with Gold collars.) :D I don't know if they are still wearing them, though.

I don't believe I have been a part of a church since then that seriously wore or wanted to wear choir robes with any startling regularity.

No on the robes, but then there are only 7 or 8 in the choir.

I'm not sure what the big deal is, but the church I joined just got all excited because we're finally getting choir robes.
They do look cool when you see choirs wearing them. I'm just more of the "unless it's on sale for at least 50% off ya don't need it" type. And nobody wants a church choir wearing half-off robes...

Originally, choir robes were for uniformity on the platform. Many pastors also wore Geneva gowns when they preached.

I like gowns in both areas. Then, I wear a clergy collar too!

    Cheers,

    Jim

Every church I have been a member of, except one, has used choir robes. That church did not have a choir. Our current pastor wears a robe for Sunday services. Some of our members were not happy about it, but I think we're getting used to it.

One of my former churches had a choir. They all wore robes. I wished they had voices.

My first Sunday there I named them the Prison Choir - behind a few bars looking for a key. They sang a special anthem in recognition of my installation. As I approached the pulpit with tears streaming down my cheeks the choir director asked, "Were you moved by our song?"

    "No," I replied, "I'm a music lover."

That's neat. My pastor just wears a suit. Why were some members unhappy about it?

We're given buckets so we can at least pretend we can carry a tune. They double as barf buckets for the non-tone deaf.

That's great. I'll have to pass it along to some people I know.

I suspect that, for many, it was just the unfamiliarity of it. My mother-in-law viewed it as a step toward Catholicism. My wife reminded her that, when my wife was a teenager in Florida, their pastor and minister of music always wore white suits in summer. They weren't wearing robes, but my wife viewed them as uniforms nonetheless. It didn't sway her mother.

At our former church, our pastor also wore a Geneva robe. I really prefer this much better, though our current pastor wears a suit.

We only have a choir at our early traditional service (our contemporary service is more of worship team). I think they still wear robes (I go to the later service).

When we had a choir, they wore robes. But they were mainly for uniformity and sometimes for modesty. They dressed modestly but sometimes even with a longer skirt how they sat could be a problem. The robes allowed for both comfort and modesty.
