We have all heard the saying, "hate the sin, love the sinner"

I was at a pastors conference today, and one pastor said "Hate the sin, deal with the problem"

    I like it,

Sometimes dealing with the problem IS loving the sinner. And sometimes dealing with the problem is breaking fellowship with the sinner.

So, I guess he is right.

So how does "deal with the problem" manifest itself? If the person is lost, the problem is first salvation, not, for example, the homosexuality.

When Jesus confronted the woman caught in adultery---what'd He say to her???

    "Go, and sin no more"

There we are-----hate the sin---deal with the problem

The flesh is weak but the spirit is willing. Never give up on people, especially our brothers and sisters.

I prefer "forgive the sin; love the sinner".

I'm sorry, Paul, but "forgive the sin" sounds too much like "condone the sin" or "overlook the sin." We are told to forgive people not sin. Of course, we know that only God can forgive sin to the point of saving someone.

If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

    Matthew 5:29-30 ESV

Listen to the words of the Lord as to the seriousness of sin. He is Gracious to us though.

How we take God's Grace for granted, just as the early Romans did. Yes, into Romans today. :)

It is a little bit different than saying, "If your brother's eye offends thee, pluck it out."

"Love the sinner, hate the sin" really sounds good. We have to be careful, however, that we understand what we're saying. One thing we're attempting to do is to separate the sinner from his sin.

    There's a problem with that.

No one can be separated from his sin apart from the shed blood of Jesus.

Should we hate sin? Sure. Should we love sinners? Sure But let's make sure those little cliches say what we want them to say.

Anyone who loves God hates sin in all its manifestations. To love the sinner means to show him the error of his way. That involves warning him of the coming judgment and telling him the provision God made to escape it.

I'd be interested in reading your interpretation(s) of a verse that's troubled me for quite some time:

"The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity." Psalm 5:5 (Bolding mine.)

Notice that it not say works but rather it says workers.

In light of the theme of this thread, can anyone explain what this verse is telling us about God?

We had a patient at the VA Medical Center where I worked who did just that--only he took out both eyes with an ink pen. He accidentally got locked in the chapel. When the housekeeper went in to clean it, the man stumbled out and down the corridor. The housekeeper went into the chapel and found two eyes staring at him from one of the pews. Gross!

The Bible says, that the LORD hates sin, and loves the sinner!
(And that’s good enough for me.)

Well right off the top of my head.......

    God hates sin........
“Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, [even] thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.” (Hebrews 1:9)

    But loves the sinner....
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

There are several other passages in psalms like this...It seems clear that God hates sinners...and also loves them, as many other passages attest.
