A little pole. Fasting breaks spiritual bondages and yokes in our lives. I was wondering how many of you fast?

    How long did you fast?

And what was the benefit from fasting?

And how long have you been in the church?

Fasting is private. I fast. but not to get something.. That's selfish
Not to try to coerce God into doing something.. that's selfish..
Not to break "spiritual bondage"... (RED FLAG HERE... THAT IS WORD AND FAITH GOBBLEDTY GOOK!... I THINK WE HAVE A CHARISMATIC LOOSE ON THE BOARD_)

Fasting is only to be done to draw closer to Christ...

Tim is right. Fasting is private.

Matthew 6:16-18 "Whenever you fast, don't be sad-faced like the hypocrites. For they make their faces unattractive so their fasting is obvious to people. I assure you: They've got their reward! But when you fast, put oil on your head, and wash your face, so that you don't show your fasting to people but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you."

With that being said, I have fasted a few times in the past. And it was for the purpose of hearing God's voice more clearly and being more obedient. And I didn't share with anyone that I was fasting.

    Just some general thoughts.

One can fast from many things. Food, television/computer, and even married couples can abstain from sex for a time if both agree. And as I read times of fasting in the Bible, it was for spiritual growth and direction from God.

Fasting is the abstention from the satisfaction of carnal apetites in the worship of God. When the Scriptures speak of fasting, the abstention from food is always in view.

We fast for many reason. In fasting we are drawing closer to God and putting the flesh in subjection to the spirit. No fasting no power will develop in your walk with Christ. I am saddened by how few fast today. Fasting is a mandate from the Lord, if your brother is sick you should fast and see the Lord on his behalf. If you have lost loved ones fast and seek the Lord. If you serious about your faith fast Get empowered and get the victory. Fasting moves God and it gets results. But fast for the right reason not just selfish ones. Of Course you want to be like Jesus don't you. Jesus fasted alot. The Prophet did also and the Apostles did as well. So do you fast and seek the wisdom of the Lord and direction. Fasting is cutting off the desires of the body, weaking the flesh and gaining strength in the spirit. That you may pray and get results. So got any good cop outs for not fasting?

Didn't Jesus talk about this being a private matter?
You may fast for many reasons, but only those that are scriptural matter, God will only honor that which He has siad, not what we say about it.

Fasting is private I guess in the fact that we are not to show that we are. We all have many reasons why we should fast. Personal and for other things. I need to fast. My health would probably improve as well.

I cringe whenever I hear someone talk about fasting. I know some folks that do and it's not real private. I feel sorry for them. I double cringe whenever I hear someone tell someone else they need to fast. It's usually the same garbage. You're not spiritual enough because you don't fast. If you really want God to hear your prayers you need to fast. Gimme a break.

I have no problem with fasting. But the highlighted text sure sounds like W of F to me.

    BTW, who is The Prophet?

I think there is a place for it though. Very easy to knock things these days. Church is a mess.

Fasting is not the problem. It's the approach taken to it, and the elitist attitude of the people pushing it.

Notice that there is not Biblical support for suggesting that fasting moves God and gets results.

Indeed. We miss the whole point. As on many things I guess.

I have always believed that prayer moves the Hand that can change things in the world. God hears prayer and especially sincere ones.

I agree. And, fasting can play a role in prayer but to make fasting into some super spiritual discipline is un-Biblical.

Yep, takes you toward the Pharisee way, with long flowing robes and open prayers that all can see. Agreed.

I think Jesus expects us to fast. He didn't say, "If you fast . . . ," rather He said "When you fast . . . ."

No argument there. But, it's not to be on display nor is it to be used as a means to an end.

I've only fasted one time for three days. I was looking for an answer as to whether or not I should quit my job and go to Bible college. After three days of fasting and praying, I got the answer that I should go, and I've never regretted that even though I returned to my job afterward. I went for the purpose of studying music to better serve the Lord. I've been saved since May 18, 1963.
