    The people that think you're just ignorant and unlearned because you don't got the HOLY GHOST. I personally feel like running my head into a wall. I've about had enough of the mindset that speaking in tongues is like a trump card you can play on obeying God and rightly dividing the word. :BangHead:

    Don't bang your head too hard on the wall, my man.
    Remember, you're on a Baptist board, and Baptists are a "peculiar" people.

    What's amazing is the ones that come to a Baptist site, and LIE about being a Baptist while promoting the oneness doctrine from HELL.. while trying to tell us we need to Holy Spirit....

    BUDDY... IF YOU DON'T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT LYING ABOUT BEING A BAPTIST... YOU NEED THE HOLY SPIRIT!

    I know. I'm Baptist, and I know we have more divisions than a math class. BUT, be it whatever flavor Baptist I can think of, or Methodist, Prebyterian, etc. - we do things different, hold different things to be important, but at the heart agree on salvation. These people think we're ALL going down.

    You must be exposed to the Oneness Pentecostal Denomination, because most pentecostals do not believe the way you describe. Oneness Pentecostal churches are considered a cult by other pentecostals and by the SBC. Unforunately, the Oneness people are very vocal about these types of beliefs and give other Pentecostals a bad name.

    The charismatic belief that the second blessing of salvation happens upon "receiving" the Holy Spirit is a misunderstanding of Scripture.

    Holding other Christians to one's standard of poor theology and exegesis is a terrible thing to do. The charismatic belief here is lacking.

    well...off to my next meeting! :D

    ==I don't know about the current situation. However I do know that, contrary to what some have said, there are Baptists who espouse Pentecostal beliefs and probably even the oneness heresy. So it is possible that the person was not lying when they said they are Baptist. It would have been nice to get some responses before the thread was shut down. I guess that is one of the privileges of the powers that be. I certainly don't want to deny our someone from "pooping" in now and then :laugh:. That still cracks me up.

    When asked if I have ever been filled with the "Holy Ghost" I always reply "Yes many times" and to the question "Have you recieved the Holy Spirit (or Ghost)" I reply "Yes once and for all".Of course this is usually followed by "did you speak in tongues" to which you can reply Dont think so. Hardly think so or something else. Of course they always look at me as to say What a pity.

    If I remember correctly, most of the time when people was filled with the Holy Spirit in the NT, they became witnesses for Christ.

    As for tongues being the "Gift of the Holy Spirit," I believe that the Holy Spirit IS the gift.

    yo, i'll poop to that !
    I know of at least one baptist church in the Philippines who is definitely bapticostal, and another one who does not organize independent churches but rather have "satellite" churches who send all their tithes and offerings to the mother ship who in turn budgets the pastors' salaries and other expenses.

    I will admit that it is very difficult for us who are right all the time not to appear holier-than-thou.

    We had a pastor who used to sing the old song, "O Lord, it's hard to be humble when you're perfect in every way."

    Jesus is the Gift, the Holy Spirit the guarantor of the price paid and the seal which no one can break.

    The gift in Acts 2 was not tongues but the real miracle was in the hearing by all present

    The real gift was the coming of the Holy Spirit, period. The tingues and the hearing were just icing on the cake and were never meant to be the focus of the passage. Until people can tear their eyes off the flash and tinsel and look at the reason behind what was seen and heard false doctrines and beliefs will persist and continue to be perpetuated in God's church.

    As for how I handle "holier than thou" people, I simply ignore them until they decide to get in my face. When they do, I give them the word of God and it alone. God's word speaks plenty about pride and judging others and is perfectly capable of getting its point across.

    Tongues was a sign gift to Israel and proselytes that the New Covenant was now being enacted. It was not a confirmation that Israel (or anyone else) was "holier than thou" towards or among the Jews and Gentiles who would believe.

    The tongues of Acts 2 began a series of events which led to the inclusion of the Gentiles and eventually a bonding of equality of believing Jew and Gentile into the church(es), the earthly manifestation of the kingdom of God.

    Acts 2
    17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
    18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
    19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
    20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:
    21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
    22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders andsigns, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:

    To the "Hebrews"...

    Hebrews 2:
    1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
    2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
    3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
    4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
    5 For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.

    "was confirmed": past tense, not "being confirmed", presumably no more confirmation is now necessary.

    Hebrews 8
    6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
    7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
    8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
    ...
    13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

    Hebrews 12
    23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
    24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

    A New Covenant into which the gentiles were/are included:

    Acts 11:1 And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.
    ...
    18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

    Acts 13
    47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.
    48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.

    Acts 15
    6 And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.
    7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.
    8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;

    I know its a presumption (and not a big one) but if, after the union of Jew and Gentile in this age of grace (as opposed to mosaic law), there is now no need for these "sign" gifts.

    Ephesians 2
    11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
    12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
    13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
    14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
    15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
    16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

    1 Corinthians
    22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
    23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;

    Anyone who doesn't have the Holy Sporit in them is not saved. "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." Romans 8:9.

    If we are saved, then we have the Holy Spirit, but does the Holy Spirit have us? That means is He in control of our lives or are we? We are all given the Holy Spirit at our new birth in Christ, and He indwells us and promised in Hebrews 13:5 that "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee."

    Some believe that through some divine spiritual experience we are given the Holy Spirit once we are spiritual enough, but that is false. We receive the Holy Spirit the moment we are saved, but that does not mean we are Spirit-filled. That happens only when we push "self" aside and allow that divine Spirit within us to take over and be in control. After nearly 47 years of being saved, I have yet to reach that polint.
