Dr. Black has been a member of the ISV Bible translation team. But though it has the word "brothers"in the text a great deal -- he prefers "brothers and sisters", especially in 1 Thessalonians.

In his blog from 8/07 at 11:53AM he prefers :

We know, beloved brothers and sisters...
For you yourselves know, brothers and sisters ...
For you remember, brothers and sisters ...
For you became imitators, brothers and sisters ...
Having been taken away from you, brothers and sisters ...
    Therefore, brothers and sisters ...
    Furthermore, brothers and sisters ...
I don't want you to be ignorant, brothers and sisters ...
Now concerning the times and seasons, brothers and sisters ...
But you are not in darkness, brothers and sisters ...
We urge you, brothers and sisters ...
Now we exhort you brothers and sisters ...
Pray for us, brothers and sisters ...

Just being polite. I think most of us know what he means.

Yes, I'm reading his "Jesus Paradigm" for a book review. In it he does his own translations and favors "brothers and sisters" for the Greek adelphoi.

Then why didn't he put that in the text? He was the senior editor, was he not?

Do you object to those renderings?

From his blog entry of Jan. 30th,2014 @ 10:18 AM:

It seems to me that 'brothers and sisters' for adelphoi is just fine as long as that is the meaning intended by the original author (and in many cases,it is). As for the books I write,I have begun using inclusive language pretty regularly --not because my publishers require me to do so, but because I feel it's the right thing to do in view of my audience.

But if it means bros and sis's, why not translate it as such? Perhaps it will get done in the next revision?

BTW, I like the way poetry is rendered in the ISV, often with rhythm and ryhme!

An only child has no siblings.

But doesn't the word "siblings" imply "brothers and sisters"? If that is the case, then I would argue that the latter is more personal and less formal of a term, much like adelphos.

Fine. Time to make a new word in English, intended to make EVERYONE happy, yet will offend all.

    Candidates are:
    1) brosters
    2) sisthren

    :)

A word is not necessary. We have the idea when we say "brothers and sisters".

No, Tim. The whole FUN of it all is to invent a new word.

    (sarcasm, there.)

But do you have a problem though, with the use of the words "brothers and sisters" when a given context clearly means just that?

    Laughing...

Buck, at least you didn't follow the leftist convention of inventing a new word that will offend no one, in that it means absolutely nothing.
