Adminisators in School distirces

    In another thread, I did a poll. The answer getting the most number of votes was that there was too many administrators.

    So lets take a certain school district. We will call it the Mayfield School District (Yes, think of Beaver)

    It has one high school (grades 9-12) students .............. of 600
    two Jr High's (grades 6-8) of 270 students each.... {total of 540}
    and four elem schools (K-5) of 275 students each {total of 1,080};
    thus the district total will be......................................... 2,220.

    With an average of 20 students per class there are 111 classroom teachers. The high school and Jr Hi each have a principal and asst principal, each elem has one bldg principal for a total of 10. The HS and JRH have one guidance counselor for each 100 students - total of 6.
    Each bldg has one nurse - 7 total. The office staff is about 20. This brings us to a total of 43 - add a staff of 15 for the district office and now you have 58. Add the 111 teachers, you have a total of 169. That makes the admin staff 34% of the total.
    (I realize I did not consider maint, bus drivers, ect)

    So just for teachers and admin of the school and district headquarters, is the ratio of 34% too high? If so, how would you reduce the number of staff, based on the school population? Or do you think we don't have enough?

    Overall, I think there are way too many administrators/staff in the public schools compared to the actual teachers. We see that a lot here when you compare the public to private schools where adminsitrative costs are kept under control.

    However, your example is hard to follow here. Our public school district has about 50 high schools (grades 9-12). Each high school averages about 3,500 students.

    One might conclude that the higher volume of students would create economies of scale -- thus reducing administrative costs on a percentage basis. That's not really the case -- the local high school has one principal, four assistant principals, office staff, custodial staff, food service workers, security, guidance counselors, and even a school psychologist. And that's just for starters.

    Yeah, what are ya'll doing between elementary school and middle school that is causing the loss of half the student population?

    Second question: 34% of what total? Administrators plus students? Refigure. Only 7% of that total is administation.

    Now if you want to know if a student to administrator ratio of 13 to 1 is to high/low, well my opinion is that it is probably too low given the current trends of parental non-involvment, student behavior and the expectation that the public school is equipped to educate EVERY child out there regardless of health/mental/behavior.

    Think about it. At home these kids are used to a ratio of 1 child to 2 parents or at worst 2 or 3 children to 1 parent. But we expect our schools to make do with 13 to 1. Makes one wonder who came up with that idea.

    Based on the theoretical school- each grade from k-8 has 180 students - thus absolutely no loss of students. The high school had an average enrollment of 150 per grade



    But is it the responsibley of the school to be the "parent"
    Also, I based the teacher of 20 students per class.
    When I was in school, it was more like 25-30. Why the decrease - especially when the cost of education has risen so much?
    Remember time wise the kids are in school about 1,100 hours per year. A teacher does not have the kids all those hours - probably more like 900 hours per year.
    A parent has the child the remaining 7,500 hours per year


    Thoughts? :confused:
